Y.W.C.A.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS The monthly meeting of the board of directors ot tne Y.W.C.A. was held last we ex, a special visitor being Miss Jean Stevenson, natidflal general secretary. Miss Ross presided over the following memoers:—Mesdames C. Mackie Begg, J. H. Fairbairn, C. F. Fowler, H. P. Kidson, J. Malcolm; H. H. Parata, H. D. Skinner, T. Somerville. H. K. Wilkinson, Misses F. M’Namara, Perniin, L. Sullivan and H. K. LovellSmith, general secretary. Mrs F. B. Adams and Dr E. Gregory wrote tendering their resignations. These were received with regret and a motion was passed expressing appreciation of the valuable assistance which they had given to the board. The devotional period was conducted bv Mrs Parata, who read from Edward Wood's book, “ Everyday Religion,” the chapter on “ The Problem of Living Together.” The report from the hostel showed that there were 52 residents and seven transient visitors in the hbuse. During the month 68 applicants for accommodation had to be refused owing to lack of room. The house and cafeteria secretary reported that various minor repairs had had to be carried out in the building and that the stage in the hall had been improved. The health and recreation report showed that 29 teams were playing basketball, and the hockey, badminton and dancing groups were very active. The Girl Citizens and senior club's report also showed progress. The general secretary reported on the meeting of the Women’s Auxiliary and the National Council of Women.

Mrs Mackie Begg reported on the meeting of the special committee set up to consider the state and adequacy of the present Y.W.C.A. premises. Figures showed that large sums had been spent on repairs and renovations during the past three years, and the committee strongly recommended that the question of rebuilding at an early date be 'kept in view. The present buildings were'inadequate, and a constant source of expense, and did not meet the demands made on them. Mention was made of the approaching diamond jubilee, and it was agreed that this would give the opportunity for some special effort being made towards rebuilding. Miss Stevenson spoke of the National Convention to be held in Dunedin, probably in May. 1938, and the need for definite plans. She also stated that Miss Ethel Law, M.A., the newly-STp-pointed national general secretary, would arrive in New Zealand in September and would commence her duties in October. It was probable that she would visit Dunedin before the end of the year. Members took the opportunity of bidding farewell to Miss Stevenson, who is retiring from the Y.W.C.A, in November.
