HARRIERS

LEITH CLUB This year the Leith Club has found great difficulty in getting together its Edmond Cup team. However, it will manage to start seven or eight men who will at least keep the name of the club before the public. R. Dalton is undoubtedly the most outstanding runner in the club this year, and although he has not had very much experience in this race, he should go well and be among the front-markers. D. Scott should be next on the list, although it is quite evident that this runner has not taken his training seriously enough. Still, he is a stayer and Will do his best. D Fincham and R. M’Kenzie are both going well at present. It will be the former runners ninth start in this race. M’Kenzie has developed a good style at present, and this should help him on Saturday. L. Kerr will also be in the team. He is only a Junior and will be making his first attempt, but we have no doubt lie will derive much benefit from his experience. B. A, Timms and J. C Thompson will also be members of the team, but they are not what could be called long-distance runners, although both are fit and should be able to give a good account of themselves. CIVIL SERVICE CLUB Although the Civil Service team is not as strong individually as it has been in past years, the team work should make it a solid combination. The club should again have the honour of supplying the individual winner in A. R. Geddes. Although he was taking it easily on Saturday, he was running exceptionally well, considering the very heavy state of the course. The next man to finish for the club should be N, Greaney. Greaney. who finished fourth in the Kennett Cup, did only one lap on Saturday, but should cross the line well within the first ten next week. S. Asher has shown a marked improvement since the Kennett Cup and he. too, is quite capable of being in the first ten. With very little separating them, the next four members of thtuteam—L. Greaney. W. Mackmnon. N. Coutts, and A. Kirkwoodshould be well placed. D, Whlttleston handled the heavy going better than was expected. Whlttleston has improved considerably since he started training and he will be a valuable man. both in the Edmond Cup and the Lovelock Relay Race. L. R. MMillan found the heavy going a hindrance to his running. M’Millan. who is a solid type of runner, is better at road running. but his Kennett. Cup performance showed that he is capable of a good cross-country race also. Baird has the honour of being the only junior in this year s team. CAVERSHAM CLUB Conditions underfoot were extremely bad at Wingatui last Saturday for the Caversham Hamers’ Edmond Cup Trial, and it is very doubtful whether there will be any improvement for the Cup Race. The outstanding performance was that of R. Emmerson. one of the club’s most promising juniors He won the Sealed Handicap attached to the trial and put up his best performance to date by finishing in seventh position. Crossan, also a junior, who finished twelfth,, ran very well and kept near the front markers. Neithei of these boys will be running on Saturday, as the club’s policy is to nurse the juniors as much as possible Ihe No. 1 team, which is composed of m experienced runners, should, if running up to form and expectations, do well. The No. 2 team, which is also a well-balanced combination, should run well and be a useful support for the first team. MORNINGTON CLUB The following will represent the Mornington Club in the Edmond Cup next Saturday:—Armstrong, Crooke Ferry, Graveson, Gillon, Kroon, Moore, Roxburgh. Sanders. Wilson. Everett and Foate, ' Armstrong will make his first attempt for the Edmond Cup on Saturday, and if his last year’s form in the Junior Cross-country Race can be counted on he should do well.. Crooke has represented the club in this event on four occasions, being the club s first man home in 1934, and third last year. Fred has been training consistently this year, gaining second fastest time in the Mile and fourth in the Two Miles, and ,he should improve on. his last year’s performance. Ferry is a new member this year, and after his run in both the Mile and Two Miles ■in which he gained fifth and second fastest time respectively, and his form on the Saturday runs, it would not be a surprise to see him come in well up. Graveson Is now finding his form and is improving with -very run. Last year was the first time he ran in the Edmond Cup, and he was first man home in the team. The club. has an asset in Gillon, for, after starting late in the season, he gained sixth fastest time in the Two Miles, his first race. He has settled down to serious training now, and it will be interesting to see how he shapes on Saturday. Kroon is a first-year senior, and should benefit from the experience he will gain. He represented the club in the junior event last year. Moore will make his first appearance in senior events this year. He filled second place in the Junior Cross-country Race last year in the time of 18min 3 3-ssec. Roxburgh represented the club in this event in 1935, but owing to. a bad ankle he was unable to run in 1936. He has plenty of determination as well as a strong finish, and he gained second fastest time in the mile at the beginning of the season. Sanders has represented the club 6n no fewer than six occasions. Wilson is a solid runner, and can be relied on to give a good account of himself. He filled twelfth place in the Port-Dunedin Road Race last year, and third in the Modified Marathon. This year he gained third fastest time in the Two Miles and second equal in the Mile, and is always placed in the Saturday runs The following will represent the club in the Lovelock Relay to be held ?n July 3:—Moore, Crooke, Gillon, Wilson, Sanders, Graveson, Ferry, Roxburgh; emergencies, Armstrong, Kroon. DUNEDIN CLUB The Dunedin Harriers held their Three-mile Championship and Sealed Handicap Race at St. Kilda last Saturday. J. M’Laren won, running a wonderful race. From the start he was content to stay in behind Hill and Mouat, who made a fast pace for a mile. At Lovers’ Lane M’Laren went to the lead and was not headed W. M’Leod ran a well-judged race, and gained second place to M’Laren. He also took first place in the Sealed Handicap run in conjunction with the race. L. Hill, who has been in instant training, ran a good race but the fast start was too much for him and he could not get his usual strong sprint. T. M’Donnell finished behind Hill, and ran a solid race for a junior of the club. M’Donnell can stay out a distance, but requires more fast work to get in a better finish. E, Williams, a new member, ran in behind M’Donnoll and although he has not been in training he ran the-three miles well. This member has a good style and more should be heard about him. T. Coomer ran exceptionally well but at one stage he forced the pace and was caught without his usual dash at the finish. Captain Sturgeon will have to take his training more seriously. Ho saw the distance out but will need to be faster to help his team mates on Saturday. The Dunedin Club have J M’Laron, who will, with luck, run into a place in the Edmond Cup. The following will run in the Edmond Cup Steeplechase at Wingatui: M’Laren, M’Leod, Mouat, Hill, M’Donnoll, Walliams, Coomer, Sturgeon, Bell 'rid Hastic. The following are asked to train for the Lovelock Relay Race: M’Donnell, Bell, Williams, Lonmer. Coomer, Ferguson, Mouat, M’Leod, M’Laren and Hill. The training nights are Tuesday and Thursday of each week and a full muster should attend.
