WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

The Popotunoa Women’s Institute met on June 19, Mrs A. A. Smith (president) presiding. The roll call was, “Uses of old newspapers,” The motto was, “ Do all the good you can, and never mind who gets the credit. The competitions were, “Nail driving,” won by Miss 1 8. Collins, and “ Menu for Washing Day Dinner,” won by Mrs Sanders. The remainder of the afternoon was spent in drawing up a programme for the next two months’ meetings.

The June meeting of the Taieri Institute was held in the Kinmont Hall on Thursday last, when Mrs Williamson greeted a large number of members and guests gathered to celebrate the seventh birthday of the institute. The motto was, “ It were better for us to live in darkness than to be without friends.” A short musical programme commenced with the successful debut of the new choir in “ Stars of the Summer Night” and “Silent Night, Holy Night.” Other items were two songs by Mrs M’Millan, “My Treasure” and "Maureen,” and two by Mrs Cate, “ Within a Mile of Edinburgh Town” and “Tiptoe.” A competition, “Signatures.” was won by Mrs Arthur Johnson. The proceeds from the special market table for the King George V Memorial Fund amounted to £3 9s. After the roll call, "Calls for help,” the meeting closed with a group singing competition. The hostesses were the Taien Institute members.

The June meeting of the Milton Institute was held on Friday in the Milton Hall. Mrs Gray presided. The motto was “Don’t Cultivate a Crepe de Chine Mind on a Flour-bag Income.” The . roll call was, “A First Aid Hint.” Two of the members, Mrs Hay and Mrs Porter, gave a demonstration on the St. John and roller bandaging. Mrs Hay also showed how to do “hairpin work," The competition, “The greatest number of articles in a match box,” was won by Miss Watt with Mrs Taylor second and Mrs L, Kinnaird third. In the Premier Bloom Competition Mrs Maxwell was first with Miss Watt second and Mrs M’Kinney third. Later a few of the members waited on Mrs M’Neur at the manse and presented her with a piece of crystal as a token of remembrance. The hostesses were Mesdames Brown, Findlay, Giver, Taylor and Young.
