CHARITY BALL AT OMAKAU
Brilliantly successful from all aspects, the annual Roman Catholic ball at Omakau on the evening of June 16 was a reflection of the efficiency and assiduous efforts of its organisers. Deft and willing hands had transformed the hall into a fairyland of streamers and coloured lights. Bowls and vases of chrysanthemums adorned the stage and supper tables, adding a cheery atmosphere to a happy gathering. The bright and snappy playing of an orchestra made dancers young and old enjoy the brightness of a first-class dance band. No small measure of the success obtained was due to the secretary, Mr R. J. O’Halloran, and the organising work of Mr F. J. Donnelly and Mrs M. Moran. The M.C.’s for the evening were Messrs J. W. White, R. J. O’Halloran. J. and F. J, Donnelly.
To clean lacquer or papier mache articles apply a paste of flour and olive oil, using a soft cloth, and rubbing vigorously. Give a second rubbing with a clean, soft cloth, and finally polish with a piece of silk.^ If you want the potatoes to be specially white, pour off the first water as soon as it boils, refill the saucepan, and they will be quite white. If a costume has been packed badly and is creased, do not press it, or the new look will vanish. Hang it by a fire or radiator for an hour or two, and the creases will drop out of their own accord.
