OMAKAU Personal On Monday evening a representative gathering of residents assembled at the Omakau Hall for a dance in honour of Mr C. J. Lyall, postmaster, and Mr R. J. O’Halloran, bank officer, who are shortly leaving the district. Mr W. Milne presided. Mr James Clouston, on behalf of the Matakanui Football Club, spoke of the great services rendered to the club by Mr O’Halloran in the various offices of player, coach, referee, and secretary. He also spoke of Mr Lyall’s qualities as postmaster. Mr Harper referred to the work rendered to the district by both men, and presented Mr Lyall with a cheque as a token of respect from the residents.

Mr Milne welcomed the now postmaster, Mr H. Alpine, and Mrs Alpine, and trusted that their sojourn in Omakau would bo pleasant. Presenting Mr O’Halloran with a cheque from the residents and the various sporting bodies, he spoke of the great work done by Mr O’Halloran in his capacity as an official of the football, rifle, lawn tennis, and badminton clubs. Mr Lyall and Mr O’Hailoran, thanking the people for the tokens of appreciation, stated that their stay in Omakau had been a very happy one. Mr Alpine, on behalf of his wife and himself, thanked the residents for their warm welcome. The evening was brought to a close with supper and a dance. Military Ball

The Omakau troop of the Otago Mounted Rifles has everything well in hand for its first annual ball, which will be held on Wednesday next. The ball will be run in military style, uni- } forms will be worn, and it is hoped to have present representatives from the Ist Otago Regiment and the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. PALMERSTON Personal Mr J. A. Jull, station master at Palmerston, has received notice of his transfer to Timaru. Card Tournament The card tournament for the 500 card challenge cup between Railway and Oddfellows was advanced another stage on Tuesday night, when the Lodge defeated Railway by four games. U.A.O.D,

The fortnightly meeting of the Druids’ Lodge was held in the Druids’ Hall on Tuesday. A.D. Bro. Burrows presided over a good attendance of members. Bro. Lortimer, of Mataura Lodge, was accepted as an honorary member. Sick pay amounting to £6 10s was passed for payment. It was decided to send messages of sympathy to the relatives of P.D.P. Bro. M'Gregor, and to P.A. Bro. Rankin on the death of his father. The balance sheet and auditor’s report was presented, and showed the finances of the lodge to be in a sound condition. Sick pay had increased over the period, and the membership had also increased. One new member was proposed. EASTERN SOUTHLAND Rifle Shooting The final shoot of the Gore Defence Rifle Club for the 1936-37 season was held on the M'Nab range in cold weather. A southerly wind was blowing, and this, combined with the dull light, made shooting difficult. The match, which was for a trophy presented by Mr H. Windle, was won by H. Mason, who reached the handicap limit of 70. The Mathew’s button for the top score off the rifle was won by H. Windle with a total of 65. The club championship for the Bannerman Cup has now been completed, and the winner was W. D. Milne, who has won the trophy for the last three years and now wins it outright. The following were the leading totals:—W. D. Milne 1147, C. M. Wilson 1136. P. Hay 1131, H. Windle 1126, J. Catto 1117, P. R. Mallon 1099. G. Bain 1091.

KYEBURN Miniature Rifle Shooting The weekly shoot of the Kyeburn Miniature Rifle Club was held on the club’s range on Tuesday. The winner of the Preston rifle button was A. H. Griffiths, 'while G. Creighton won the Hislop handicap button. The top 10 men’s average was 75.3. Scores were as follows: —A. H. Griffiths 78, G, Creighton 78. J. M. Griffiths 77. W. W Pearson 76, J. M. Crutchley 76, P. R. Wilson 75. J. H. Reid 75. A, F. Pearson 75, C. M. Pearson 72, W. Creighton 71.

WAIPIATA Miniature Rifle , Shooting There was a fair attendance of members at the weekly shoot of the Waipiata Miniature Rifle Club this week. The Howell button for the best score off: the riflo was won by D. Howell with a score of 79. The Gaylor handicap button was won by D. Brundell after a double shoot-off. Some of the best scores registered were:—D. Howell 79. D. Lamont 78. G. H. Mathias 77, S. Gaylor 76. V. Gare 76, F. A. Mathias 76, Rev. Mr Murray 76, E. M’Clintock 75. A. I. Mathias 75, D.
