ATHLETIC TOURNAMENT

TRAINING COLLEGE STUDENTS DUNEDIN HAS TWO-POINT LEAD AN INTERESTING COMPETITION The annual athletic tournament between teams representing the Christchurch and Dunedin Training Colleges was begun yesterday, and a day of interesting competition ended with Dunedin having a two-point lead toward regaining the tournament shield, which was lost to the home team at Christchurch last year. The programme opened with the swimming section, held at the Municipal Baths in the morning, and Christchurch made a good start by scoring 20 points to Dunedin's 17, thus taking the first two shield points of the series. Dunedin evened the score with a comfortable win at lawn tennis, the margin being 13 sets to 3, and the athletic meeting in the afternoon left the honours still even, each side scoring 19 points. Dunedin went ahead in the evening, winning four of the six boxing contests In convincing style. The tournament will be concluded to-day with hockey matches in the morning at Logan Park at 9.30 and 10.30 o'clock, basketball on the University court at 1.30, and Rugby football on the University Oval, Logan Park, at 2.45. The points so far are as follows: ChristDunedin. church. Swimming ...,-—, 2 Lawn tennis .. v Athletics .... 1 1 Boxing .... 2

The various matches yesterday were supervised by officers of the colleges and representatives of the bodies under whose control they come. The organisation was excellent, and the opportunity was taken in the evening to thank officials for their interest and practical assistance. The Christchurch party arrived in Dunedin on Monday afternoon, and the visitors were entertained at a conversazione at the college in the evening. Mr R. T. M'Kelvey, president of the Dunedin Training College Students' Association, welcomed them. A picture party was organised last evening, and this evening the tournament will end with the annual ball, SWIMMING

Christchurch started off with a win in the swimming section, totalling 20 points to Dunedin's 17. The visiting men showed a definite superiority, winning every event except the diving class. Their performances in the freestyle events were very creditable, M. A. Marks proving a valuable member of the team by being placed second four times. Dunedin scored heavily in the women's events, Misses E. Brown, J. Eastgate, and D. Thomson proving a trio whose ability brought every title to Dunedin. The relay honours were divided, the Dunedin women winning and the Christchurch men scoring easily.

Dunedin players won all the Singles, the most interesting match being that between J. Gazzard (Dunedin) and J. Gilbert, which Gazzard won 9—6. G. Maslin was extended to beat K. Starnes 9—7 and there were two closely-fought and interesting Mixed Doubles, both ending 9—B in favour of the Dunedin pairs Miss K. ATHLETICS Conditions on the University Oval at Logan Park were anything but favourable to fast times and good performances generally, but the athletic section, which was held there in the afternoon, proved the most interesting of yesterday's series. The result was a tie, 19 points each, the Dunedin relay team scoring a popular win in the last event of the afternoon to draw level. Under the conditions, some good performances were recorded. P. Jowett 'Christchurch) accounted for the two sprint events, and J. Lee was a valuable scorer for the visitors, winning the 120 Yards Hurdles, the High Jump, Long Jump, and Hop, Step, and Jump. The shield points were one to each team. The results were as follows: 100 YARDS P. Jowett (Christchurch) .. 1 J. S. Allan (Dunedin) .. 2 Time, 10 4-ssec. Won by two yards. 220 YARDS P. JAVELIN THROW E. R. Hounsell (Christchurch), 143 ft llin 1 J. H. Opie (Dunedin), 134 ft sin .. 2 RELAY Dunedin (Robertson, Donaldson, Allan and Opie) 1 Christchurch (Hounsell, E. Fancy, Lee and Jowett) 2 Robertson finished the half-mile a yard ahead of Hounsell and Donaldson opened up a break of seven yards over the; quarter. Allan held this margin and Opie finished well to win by six yards. It was an interesting afternoon and there was great enthusiasm when the Dunedin team started in the Relay with a win necessary to divide the athletic honours. The points were 19 to each team. BOXING The Dunedin boxing representatives had a comfortable win. The bouts were held in Marama Hall, which was crowded, and although Dunedin won four of the six contests, there were one or two very bright and even exhibitions. The Dunedin boxers were the fitter and there was no doubt about their superiority as a team. Dunedin scored two shield points. The results were as follows: FEATHER-WEIGHT G. Johnston (Dunedin) 9st beat A. E. East (Christchurch) 9st. Johnston was much the straighter hitter and a stiff left scored well for him in the first round. The second was a willing affair, East chasing his man, but taking some solid punishment. Again in the third round Johnston let East rush and countered with both hands. Johnston won well, but it was a rattling good opening bout. LIGHT-WEIGHT R. G. Edwards (Christchurch) 9.13 beat R. G. Sutton (Dunedin) 9.13. This was an even bout between two straight punchers. Both connected with good lefts, but both were defensive boxers, and there was little aggressiveness. Sutton was ahead when the last round started, but then he became too eager, and Edwards countered consistently to the head and earned the decision by a narrow margin. WELTER-WEIGHT G. M'Fadzien (Dunedin) 10.5 beat J. H. O'Rourke (Christchurch) 10.6. M'Fadzien picked off his man as he pleased, and had the easiest of wins. It was not a match. MIDDLE-WEIGHT J. S. Thomson (Dunedin) 11.2 beat S. O. Field (Christchurch) 11.0. This was a lively affair. Thomson was the stronger, and he crowded the Christchurch man from gong to gong. There was very little clean hitting, but Thomson's aggressiveness won him the verdict. LIGHT-HEAVY-WEIGHT J. H. Opie (Dunedin) 11.10 beat D. Daly (Christchurch) 11.5. Opie made short work of Daly, jolting him hard with both hands. Daly was dov/n for a count of eight halfway through the round, and the bout was stopped. Opie was clearly too strong and experienced. HEAVY-WEIGHT R. Gaudin (Christchurch) 13.0 beat J. T. Chapman (Dunedin) 12.0. Gaudin, a heavy puncher, had things his own way. Chapman being unable to keep him off. The Dunedin man absorbed a lot of punishment.
