INTOXICATED MOTORISTS

TO THE EDITOR

Sir,—ln respect to a recent Police Court proceedings case in which an intoxicated motorist pleaded guilty to colliding with a car and a lorry while in an unfit state to drive, I was vividly struck with the leniency shown in contrast with other cases. In this particular case the offender was fined £lo and costs and his licence was cancelled for six months. Why was he not, as has been done with other intoxicated drivers, placed as well under a prohibition order? It would be useful if, in cases of this kind, the police would ascertain how much the company with which the offender's car is insured had to pay out in claims during a year, and whether, and when and where the offender has had similar accidents. In justice to the users of the roads, and to men who have received a far stirrer punishment. I pen this letter.—l am, etc., Disgusted. June 21.
