ALLEGED INCREASE IN DRINKING
ro THE EDITOR Sir, —The remarks of the chairman of the Hawke's Bay County Council that increased wages and fewer hours to workers have brought about an alarming increase in drinking denote a serious state of affairs. Since the institution of the Government’s policy there has been a great increase in drunkenness all over the country, and in the cities the number of intoxicated men to be seen on a Saturday morning is disgusting. The allegations of the county chairman cannot be denied, and if any further proof is needed it is contained in the financial statement for the year ended March 31, some details of which have just been published. These figures show that beer duty revenue increased by over £IOO,OOO in the 12 months, as compared with last year. It is an illwind that blows no one any good, however, and housewives who find the increased cost of living so difficult to bear can find consolation in the fact that the liquor trade is benefiting.—l am, etc.. Worker.
