Looking much invigorated after a week’s spell in hospital, the Minister of Public Works (Mr R. Semple) attended at his office in Wellington for a brief period yesterday to sign urgent papers. He stated that a medical examination disclosed the fact that he was organically sound, and that his indisposition had been due to strain and overwork.
Sir Robert Anderson arrived yesterday from Invercargill, and will remain in Dunedin for a week.
At last night’s meeting of the City Council Mr A. French (Ravensbourne) was appointed to act as clerk of works in connection with the Clyde Hill housing scheme.
\ The Union Airways liner Korimako left the Taieri airport at 8.15 yesterday morning for Christchurch, Blenheim, and Palmerston North with Mr G, Dobby and Mr C. N. Thomas for Christchurch. Miss E. Lord for Nelson, and Mr J. H. Hamel for Palmerston North. The Karoro arrived from the north at 1 p.m. with Mr ,D. Burke from Wellington.
At the city car sheds on Friday afternoon Mr Gordon Smith, who has left the service owing to ill-health after serving nine years and a-halr on the running staff, was met by his fellow-workers and presented with a well-filled wallet. In the absence of the president of the Tramway Union (Mr MTigue), Mr. Arthur Cameron made the presentation, and wished Mr Smith better health in the future. Mr Smith suitably replied.
The ashes of Mrs K. M. Shepherd, who died at Liverpool in January last, were brought to Port Chalmers by the Melbourne Star, which arrived on Sunday and were interred yesterday in the new cemetery at Port Chalmers. Mrs Shepherd was a daughter of the late Captain J. W Gumming, a very old identity of Port Chalmers, and it was fitting that the funeral, which was of a private nature, should have been held from Holy Trinity Church, where she was confirmed as a girl. The seivice at the church and at the graveside was conducted by the vicar, the Kev, E. G. Wilson.
