A 250-vear-old oak tree—planted by South Africa's first du Toit, now one of the most common names in the Union—has been destroyed by fire. The tree grew on the farm named Klcinbos, at Dalosophat, in Cap-i Province. It was there that the first du Toits in South Africa came to live and where the first of them, Francois du Toit. planted the tree in the latter part of the seventeenth century. The tree's destruction has been caused indirectly by a swarm of bees They established themselves in its trunk and, despite the honey they produced, it was decided to smoke them out. A fire was lighted beneath the branches. This drove the bees away—and the tree went. too. Its gnarled bark caught alight and before the flames could £>e ma?tered the whole tree was ablaze.
