Reports of meetings of branches are requested but they should be furnished promptly, for the publication ol reports that are not supplied within a week from the date of the meeting cannot be promised The Paretai Women’s Institute met on Saturday and was presided over by Mrs Thomson (vice-president). The roll call was "A verse of poetry I learnt at school.” The motto was, If you cannot get what you want, like what you get.” The competition, “An article made from a sugar bag," was won by Mrs Rumney. The hostesses were Mrs Mackintosh and Miss M. Dipple. « ♦ *
The Tawanui Institute met on Tuesday at Beechvale. Mrs Sharpe presided. The motto was “Kind hearts are the garden, kind thoughts are the roots, kind words are the blossoms, kind deeds are the fruits.” The roll call was “ Favourite, recipes.' Mr M'Cosh gave a demonstration on “ Cane trays,” The competition lor “Best light cake ” was won by Mrs Winton with Mrs Miller second Hostesses were Mesdames Fraser and Miller.
The Janefleld Institute met on June 10 in the Hill Hall, Mrs Dryden (president) occupying the chair. The motto was "An ounce of cheerfulness is worth a pound of sadness.” Mrs Carruthers pf Lovell’s Flat, gave a demonstration on "Beaten brass work.” An exhibition of chrysanthemums was sold in aid of the King George V Memorial Fund. Hostesses were Mesdames Bowie, Connor and Davidson and Miss Graham,
The June meeting of the Walwera Institute was held in the Waiwera Hall on Tuesday, Mr Jameson presiding. The competition, “Best bowl of chrysanthemums," was won by Mrs C. Grant, with Mrs Len Dunn and Miss Estelle Jameson second equal. Mrs Carmody of Balclutha, gave a demonstration on the making of meat pies. The " golden thread” talk was given by Mrs J. A Taylor, who read a paper on the life of the late Dr Margaret Cruickshank of Waimate. The motto for the month was “If you cannot have the best make the best of what you have.” The roll call was “An Inch from a newspaper" * * * n» t v
The Puerua Institute met on Wednesday. The president, Mrs P. Grant, presided. The motto was “With the heart always right, the head seldom is wrong." The roll call was “A knitting hint.” A competition for “ Gingerbread “ was won by Mrs Caldwell with Mrs G. Grant and Miss P. Grant second eoual in the senior section, and by Miss S. Mason in the junior section. Mrs Dipnie gave a demonstration on re-footing stockings. A loan packet on “Trays and Diets for Invalids” was studied. The hostesses were Mrs Caldwell and Miss E. Mercer.
At the June meeting of the Waipahi Institute Mrs Brown presided. Mrs Gutschlag, voluntary organiser for the Eastern Southland Federation, was present. The roll call was, “ Sing, say or penny pay,” and the competition, " Girdle scones,” Miss M. Murray being first and Mrs A Brown second. Mrs Gutschlag gave a demonstration on “ Flower-making from wood fibre.” and also a talk on institute matters. The hostesses were Mesdames Thomson and Withers.
The Lovell’s Flat Institute met on Wednesday afternoon. Miss Clarke occupying the chair. The motto was “Laugh whenever you can: it is cheap medicine," and the roll call "A winter pudding.” The competition for a knitting bag was won by Mrs Trusler with Miss Clarke second and Mrs Lowery third. A vote of sympathy was passed to Mrs Trusler in the loss of her brother. Miss Anderson gave a report of the annua] provincial meeting held in Balclutha recently. A box from the A.C.E. on “The home-dressmaker’s outfit” was explained by Mrs Trusler. The hostesses were Mrs Bowie and Miss Anderson * * * V
When the Taumata Institute met Miss C. Hamilton presided. The motto was “ Don’t look for the flaws as you go through life and if ever you do find them, it is wise to be somewhat blind and look for the virtues behind them.” The roll call was “ A dream I had." Mrs Waters gained first and second prizes in a competition for fancy butter. Mrs Stevenson, of Waiwera, gave a talk on different women's organisations of the world The hostess was Mrs Anderson.
Mrs Mowat presided at the meeting of the Clydevale Institute, which was held in the hall on Thursday. The motto was " Sink yourself for the service of others.” The roll call was “ Insects 1 most dislike and why." Mrs Thompson gave a demonstration on “ a Tireless cooker.” In a competition for “ best broom ” Mrs Soper was first. The hostesses were Mcsdamcs Kee, G. Dunlop, and Smith.
