LOWRY AND WEIR
INVALUABLE PARTNERSHIP THE LANCASHIRE MATCH NEW ZEALAND'S TOTAL 220 (From the Special Correspondent of the United Press Association with the New Zealand cricket team. - ) PRESTON, June 16. Weir and Lowry again saved the tourists from a total collapse by their partnership, which yielded 75 runs for the seventh wicket in 95 minutes. The wicket and outfield were so somnolent that runs were decidedly difficult to obtain.. Vivian and Hadlee made a serviceable opening. Kerr shaped promisingly, and Donnelly appeared set when he attempted a short single. Six wickets were down for 122 when the saviours of the game against Worcester again came to the rescue of New Zealand.
Lowry, who captained the side in the absence of Page, played a very sound innings, batting 95 minutes without making a mistake. Weir stayed two hours, making a determined and invaluable stand. The partnership was broken just before the advent of the new ball, and the last three wickets fell comparatively cheaply. New Zealand enjoyed an early success when the county batted, but Paynter and Iddon, as in the first game at Manchester, faced the bowling with complete confidence, scoring freely. The slow bowlers were quickly brought on, but the wicket was too slow to assist their spin. The Preston public showed much interest in the visit, the crowd numbering about 4000. The Lancashire team is E. Paynter, J. L. Hoowood. J. Iddon, F. Watson, N. Oldfield. W. H. Lister, W. E. Phillipson, A. Nutter. F. M. Sibbles, G. Duckworth, and W. E. Rhodes. SPIN BOWLER NEEDED
(From the Special Correspondent of the United Press Association.)
BLACKPOOL. June 17. (Received June 17, at 11.55 p.m.) Declaring that the New Zealand team was potentially much better than its record indicates, Mr Howard Marshall aptly summarises the reasons for the moderate scoring of the New ZeaJanders. He says: " Their trouble is largely due to the difficulty of getting used to a variety of wickets. In New Zealand they have consistency of turf, the ball coming through at an even height and pace. Here they are playing every day. and they are not accustomed to the strain. The team has met a bewildering mixture of pitches, ranging from rather sticky to exceptionally fiery, producing anything from a rising ball to a dead shooter." He says the team is a delightful band.of keen players who will probably acquit themselves worthily for the rest of the tour. Its main needs are a first-class spin bowler and another fastish opening bowler.
The Manchester Evening News says the team lacks outstanding personalities, with the exception of Wallace, who " should develop even greater brilliance than Dempster." Messrs F; Cheeter and F. Walden have been appointed umpires for the first test. The former officiated in all three tests in 1931.
