THE Otago Daily Times. " Inveniam viam aut faciam." [Established November 19, 1861.] DUNEDIN, MONDAY, JUNE 18, 1866.

SEVENTY-ONE YEARS AGO

The great event of the month is the commencement of the Panama Service. The first steamer leaves Wellington on the 23rd for Panama, and the mails will reach England about the 13th or 14th of August. . . . The Panama and Suez mails will close here on the same day, and reach England about the same time with the present arrangement; thus entailing upon merchants and others a double amount of work with no object gained. To pit the new service against its old rival is a great mistake. As a matter of course, for postal purposes, people will prefer the longer established service, which, whatever it may be on the outward route, is punctual enough on the homeward. As a mail service, the Panama has yet to establish its reputation in the face of great difficulties. The boats will have to do what has never before been done—they will have to run nearly 15,000 miles without repairing. In their course from Wellington to Panama and back, they will have no means of Drocuring repairs. If they break down they will have to make one of the ports north or south of the isthmus for repairs, or come back under sail. SHIPPING SUMMARY. The past month has not been so busy in shipping as its predecessor, which may be accounted for by the long list of overdue vessels. The arrivals, as chronicled at the Port Chalmers Custom-House, have been thirty-four vessels, representing a tonnage of ten thousand two hundred and fifty-eight tons; while the departures from the same source are thirty-seven, with a tonnage of eight thousand five hundred and seventy-two. The above is exclusive of small coasters and steamers which pass to Dunedin from sea. Amongst the arrivals are only two from foreign ports. . . . GOLD STATISTICS. The total exports of gold from the Province of Otago, from the time of the discovery of the Gold-fields until the end of the year 1865, amounted to 1,875,0530 z, the exports for the several years having been—

Since the commencement of the year, 69,7840 z have been exported, which, added to the above amount, gives a total export since the discovery of gold of 1,999,5310 z. The amounts received by escort since the beginning of the present year have been —
