LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
RIDING INSTRUCTIONS •TO THE EDITOR
Sir—l join issue with your sporting writer, "Sentinel," when he takes owners to task in this morning's Daily Times for " cumbersome riding instructions." There are horses that run well in front; there are horses that are run to advantage in behind; and only their owners know of these characteristics. I once heard the late Stuart Waddell say to "Bob" Derrett, "Hold his head to the straight and then let him go." It was no " cumbersome instruction," for the horse won. May T ask " Sentinel" if he were the owner of Kelly would he " leg up " his jockey and say "Do your best," or "Go to the front and stay there"? As lam an old-timer perhaps my ideas are. different to your youthful "Sentinel," but as an owner—and I know there are others in agreement with my views —I take his opinion as expressed in to-day's Daily Times as a deliberate affront to the integrity and ability of those who keep the game going today.—l am, etc., The Owner. Dunedin, June 17.
