Considerable comment has been made locally on the action of the Clutha and Matau A. and P. Society, at ’a committee meeting on Saturday night, in deciding to hold the summex show on a date to clash with the second day of the Dunedin Show. It is realised that Otago is not large enough agriculturally to hold two big shows on the same date without damage being done to both from an entry and gate receipts point of view. Local shopkeepers, it is said, would prefer to have the show on the traditional Friday. There is talk of calling a general meeting of members of the local society and inviting members of the Dunedin Society to attend, with a view to fixing dates that would not clash, and so benefiting both societies. RANFURLY Golf Last Saturday the men played the first round of the competition' for the M'Grath Knock-out Cup. Next Saturday the second round of the competition for the Black and White Cup will be played in conjunction with the first qualifying round of the Club Championship. The women played a Medal Match over nine holes, and the winner was Miss Taylor with a score of 53 — 18—35. School Hockey The Gimmerburn School team played a match against the Ranfurly School girls on Saturday, and the latter team won by four goals to nil. School Football In the first match of the Schools’ Association Competition on Saturday Southern defeated Naseby by eight points to nil. , Hockey Tournament On the King’s Birthday a hockeji tournament was conducted by the Ranfurly and Naseby Clubs at Naseby. The results were:—Schoolgirls: Naseby A. Schoolboys: Naseby. Women: Ranfurly A. Men: Brown’s. In the evening a dance was held m the Naseby Town Hall. TEMUKA Hotel Inspection At the annual meeting last week of the Temuka Licensing Committee it was arranged that the committee should pay a visit as early as possible to the licensed houses in Temuka and Winchester for the purpose of ascertaining at first-hand whether there was proper provision made for escape in case of fire. The result of the inspection, which took place on Tuesday afternoon. will be made known at the next meeting of the Licensing Committee. Mr H. W. Morgan, S.M., the chairman, accompanied the committee on its visit.

Farming Operations The weather in South Canterbury up to the present has been entirely favourable for farming operations, and the Temuka district in particular has benefited by what can be aptly termed a very mild winter. Even at this period of the year many paddocks present a green appearance, and stock are wintering well as feed is still plentiful. The early-sown crops are coming away splendidly, although a few hard frosts, intermingled with passing showers and bright sunny days, have been common during the past month. The dairy farmers report that the milk supplies are going oft, but there is still a plentiful supply available to keep the butter factories operating at full time throughout the district. Personal

Constable R. T. Shannon, of Stewart Island, is the officer appointed to fill the vacancy in the Temuka Police Force caused by the transfer of Constable A. M’Lellan to Wairoa. Mr T. B. Fitzgerald, son of Mr and Mrs M. J. Fitzgerald, of Seadown, has received a short-service commission in the Royal Air Force, and has entered upon his preliminary training at Wigram Aerodrome. . _ , Mr W. M’Shane, late of the staff of the Geraldine Post Office, has left on transfer to Cromwell.
