Ministerial The Minister of Mines and Acting Minister of Labour (Mr P. C. Webb), who has been spending the past few days in Central Otago, travelled north by the Union Airways liner yesterday morning. Mr J. C. Begg left yesterday morning for Wellington. Mr W. A. Flavell, general manager of the Westport Coal Company, Ltdleft yesterday morning for the West Coast. Mr R. B. Tennent (director of the fields division of the Department, of Agriculture) is at present on a visit to Dunedin.

Mr E. J. Anderson returned by the afternoon express from the north yesterday from a visit to Wellington. Colonel S. C. P. Nicholls, officer commanding the Southern Command, arrived in Dunedin last night on a visit of inspection. He will return to Christchurch to-morrow.

Mr S. Taylor was a passenger for Wellington by the through express yesterday.

The resignation of Miss Phyllis J. Sutton. B.Sc., from -the staff of the Otago Girls’ High School, was accepted with regret at the monthly meeting of the ■ High Schools’ Board of Governors yesterday afternoon. Mr J. R. Neill, who has accepted a short-service commission in the Royal Air Force, will leave for England next month. Mr Neill,'who is an ex-pupil of the Otago Boys’ High School, received his training in aviation at the Otago Aero Club, where he secured his A licence three years ; ago. Messrs J. W. Munro, M.P., and W. Denham, M.P., were passengers by the through express yesterdav to attend the caucus of Government members to be held in Wellington to-day.

The Otago Education Board yesterday received advice from the Department of Education that Mr R. W. D. Maxwell had been transferred to Auckland and that the vacancies caused on the school inspectorate by his move and the retirement of Mr G. T. Palmer would be filled by the appointment of Messrs J. J. M. Finlayson and A. C. Rowe.

Dr D. G. M’Millan, M.P., left by the through express yesterday to attend a caucus of Government members in Wellington. He will then proceed to the West Coast to attend sittings of the Maternity Services Investigation Committee.

Mr A. T. Lawson, who has been appointed demonstrator in the Dental School, is the winner of the Senior Scholarship in Dentistry and, further of the Leask Medal for. Operative Dentistry and the Burt Gold Medal for Orthodontics. This performance is apparently a record. Mr Lawson came from Victoria specially to take the course in dentistry at the Otago University. He received the congratulations of the external examiners on his work.

A Press Association message from Palmerston North states that Mr J. Brice, of Marton. was elected president at the annual meeting of the Hereford Breeders’ Association.

The Union Airways liner Karoro left the Taieri airport at 8.15 yesterday morning for Christchurch, Blenheim and Palmerston North with Dr J. Ciilmour for Christchurch, Miss B. Black, Mr P. C. Webb for Wellington, and Mr J. Dyer for Palmerston North. The Kotuku arrived from the north at 1.12 p.m. with Mr F. M. Clarke from Wellington and Miss M. Pitts from Christchurch.

The appointment as assistant to Dr C E. Beeby, director of the New Zealand Council for Educational Research, Wellington, has been accepted by Mr H. C. M’Queen, formerly of Dunedin, whose resignation as lecturer in education at the Auckland University College was accepted by the college council this week. Mr M'Queen will take up his new duties in Wellington in September. The only candidate to gam first class honours, Mr M'Queen took his M.A. degree in education in ls« 8, and holds diplomas in education and social science. He has had a varied teaching career, including 12 years in primary schools and eight years in the Dunedin Technical College. For some time Mr M*Qu6cn was assistant to uy R. Lawson, professor of education at the University of Otago. He went to Auckland 18 months ago. Mr G. T. Palmer, who retired recently from the primary school inspectorate, was the guest of the Otago Education Board at morning tea yesterday. The chairman (Mr James Wallace) said that Mr Palmer had been an institution in Otago school circles for many years. From Dunedin he had gone to Timaru and then to Invercargill. Now he had come back to spend'his retirement in Dunedin. “We are proud that he was an Otago-trained teacher.” Mr Wallace said. “He has done much valuable work, and the board appreciates what he has done for education in Otago.” Mr Wallace expressed the hope that Mr Palmer would continue to take an interest in education, his life work, and that he and Mrs’ Palmer would enjoy a happy retirement. Mr D. C. Cameron and other members also spoke in appreciative terms of Mr Palmer s services. Mr Palmer briefly acknowledged the references to his work and good wishes.
