ASSISTANCE NEEDED

SOCIETY’S REQUEST TO MINISTER PROTECTION OF WOMEN AND CHILDREN (Per United Press Association) AUCKLAND, June 15. The type of case assisted by the Society for the Protection of Women and Children was brought before the Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr W. E. Parry) this afternoon, when a deputation from the society made a request for financial assistance. Mrs Molesworth, the society's inspector, mentioned that much of the work was akin to that performed by the Police Department, She referred to the cases of two missing girls, one 14 years of age and the other 17. They had disappeared from their homes. If women police had been appointed they could have tackled the cases. Mr B, Martin, M.L.C., who introduced the deputation, said much of the work done by the society relieved the Government of responsibility and expense. The work had been expanding eveyy year. Four women had to give the whole of their time to the duties involved, and the difficulty was to get the necessary funds to carry on.

The Minister said the work of the society was important. The Government was called upon to assist many organisations, but the new pensions svstem had brought about a great deal of relief. He had arranged for a vote of £l5O for the society as a special contribution, and he would bear the society in mind when distributing certain funds that were under his jurisdiction.
