Igloo was the fox terrier, personal friend of Commander Byrd on his first expedition. He died after returning to America. Chinook was the favourite sledge dog which was so popular in Dunedin. While in the Antarctic he left the camp to go away and die. The third dog was Unalaska, the loading dog of the expedition. To its memory a monument of Indiana limestone was erected in July, 1931, by the school children of Monroe, Louisiana. A bronze tablet bears the inscription: "Sacred to the memory of Unalaska, killed by a reckless motorist in this city. Jan. 3. 1931 a dog of the Byrd Antarctic expedition, whose dauntless courage played an important part in that great scientific adventure. A great leader and a true friend—lie never turned back,”
