DUNEDIN JOCKEY CLUB

WINTER MEETING OPENED NOCTURNUS WINS STEEPLECHASE BIRTHDAY HANDICAP TO NIGHTFORM INCREASED TOTALISATOR RETURNS

The Dunedin Jockey Club opened its winter meeting in fine weather, and the card attracted a large attendance, but it was rather below the gate returns of last year on the holiday date. The going was just about as heavy as it could be made, and at the finish of several races the fields were well strung out, with a lot of tired horses struggling through the mud. The steeplechase events were deprived of considerable interest by the failure of several horses to complete the course, but despite all drawbacks, the racing was very interesting. Mr C. Gieseler got all the fields away from a flatfoot start, and better despatches have never been seen at Wingatui. Adherence to the flat-foot start leaves very little to be desired. Black Banner was made favourite for the Tahuna Steeplechase, but he dropped his rider at the third fence. Cock of the North dropped his rider at the second of the stand double when in charge of the field; Possum fell at the first of the double. Grey Boy and Snowy Dawn were then disputing leadership from Sunward. Pohapa was stopped at the sod wall by Black Banner, and Gay Boa ran off at the sod wall and ditch. This left the result between Snowy Dawn, Grey Boy, and Sunward, as Radius Rod had dropped away and Bonny Buff was the only other standing up. Snowy Dawn stayed on best, and finally beat Sunward by three lengths. Grey Boy was a moderate third, and then a long way back came Radius Rod and Bonny Buff.

Combat and Guy Vixen dropped out of the Trial Handicap. Aggravate started favourite, but he failed to get amongst the money, although he looked dangerous as he followed Vallock, Scrap, Pride o' Central, Royal Ransom, and Daazler into the straight. Soliad was then up with Aggravate. Vallock stopped badly, and Scrap struggled home in front of Royal Ransom, with Dazzler and Pride o' Central close up, and then came Aggravate and Soliad, followed by Te Ahuarangi and Octane.

Signaller was made favourite for the Otago Hurdles, and had the finish to himself. He made a slight mistake at the hurdle near the mile post. The field was bunched at the far turn, and then Signaller and Giggleswick led over the second last hurdle. Signaller then came on and- won well by two lengths from Arctic Star, who beat Giggleswick by 15 lengths, with Royai Pal next. Black Duke led from the stand hurdle to the far turn, and then cropped back. Giggleswick was one of the leaders in the early stages, and after dropping back last, joined Signaller in the lead at the second last hurdle, but he tired in the run home. Rousseau was struck out of the Brighton Handicap, which proved to be a good betting race. Vantoon made the running, with Made Money last, until the home turn. Vantoon, Rose of Tarlee.and Illora, with Cintilla, was the leadership at the home turn. In a good finish home Rose of Traiee wore down Vantoon and beat him half a length. Balmenter was a bit unlucky in failing to get an opening, otherwise he might have won. Made Money made no impression on the leaders in the run up the straight. Streamline was taken out of the Otago Steeplechase. Santoft started favourite, but hEid a short life, as he dropped his rider at the first jump. Trisox went out at the second of the double—the third fence. Shillelagh Wood hit hard at the post and rails. Hunting Go, Nocturnus. and Shillelagh Wood were racing in close company in charge of the field, with Black Banner and Burglar following several lengths away. Hunting Go, Nocturnus, and Shillelagh Wood were disputing matters when going to the post and rails, the third last fence. Hunling Go fell, and Nocturnus led over the water jump and final fence, where Black Banner had closed up. Nocturnus came on to win by five lengths from Black Banner, who beat Shillelagh Wood by the same margin. Burglar was the onlv other horse to finish.

The pen went through the names of Tvavenna and Surge for the Birthday Handicap. Last Refrain carried most support in a good betting race. Daring Deed and Nightform soon took up the role of pacemakers, and Last Refrain was in their wake at the far turn Milford was then running last with Toreador. Nightform went out to the front over three furlongs from home, pnd, ridden out, won by two lengths from Queen Dorothy, who was the same distance in front of Last Refrain, and Amy Johnson next in a well-st>-ung-out field. Bay Duke, M'Heath. Queen Dorothy. Golden Dart, and Silver Lark were struck out of the Winter Handicap. Alma was bowling along in front of Ballad and Araboa looking all over a winner, but the distance beat her. and Araboa, natiently handled, got up and measured her off by a short length Double Shot drew up to get third, about three lengths away, and then came Mount Val. Half Note. Full Throttle, and Sea Fox. Salient Knight outstayed the opposition in the St. Clair Handicap, in which the distance and going stopped Peacock after looking a winner at the distance. Fog Peak stayed on better than mticipated, and Norseman drew up to cut Peacock out of a place. Malvasia, after being prominent in the early stages, failed to stay. Baltruin went wide at the turn, and New Note was pulled up. The totalisator handled £23,120 for the day (win £9652 10s, place £13.467 10s), as against £14,782 10s for the first day of the winter meeting last year, which was not a holiday. Cock of the North, Radius Rod, and Grey Boy were in front racing to the water jump, which all crossed safely. Cock of the North led Grey Boy and Radius Rod over the brush fence at the bottom of tho

straight, and Cock of the North cleared the first brush in the double opposite the stand, but lost his rider at the secorld, and Possum fell at the first of this double. This left Grey Boy in front of Snowy Dawn and Sunward The sod wall at the top of the straight, and the post and rails were crossed, but Gay Boa ran off at the small sod wall. Grey Boy was in the lead as the field turned into the back straight with Snowy Dawn and Sunward next well clear of Radius Rod. There was little change in the order as the field went along the bottom stretch, but Royal Ransom was making a forward move. Vallock led Scrap into the straight, with Royal Ransom and Dazzler handy. Vallock weakened in the run home and Scrap won by a length from Royal Ransom, who was half a length in front of Dazzler. Black Duke carried on the running from Royal Pal and Arctic Star and .he was in charge as the hurdle at the mile post was crossed, Giggleswick being still last. Glorious weather attracted 30.000 people to Ellerslie for the second day of the Auckland Racing Club's winter meeting to-day. Outsiders were again, successful in the chief races, Irish Comet accounting for the Great Northern Steeplechase and Armacourt for the King George Handicap. The 13-year-old Irish Comet who returned over a score, was the veteran of the field and the oldest horse ever to win the race, the oldest previous victors being Dick and Billy Boy. who were 1! years old when thev won in 1926 and 1930. respectively. Irish Comet was the outsider but one of the field of 13 and one of the smallest runners. On the strength or Iris good victory on the first day. All Irish was supported down to odds on for the Hunt Club Cup. and he had no difficulty in winning again All Irish gave a fine display of fencing and led throughout, givine his onponents little chance. Another favourite was successful when Erndalc repeated his first day's success bv scoring in the Ranfurly Handicap Captain Bruce and Grand City were hopelessly left and Alvth was first away from Valspcar and Pirate King Vnlspenr was in front before «oinp ■* fur'ons ->:id led into the straight from Pirate King Alvth. Philemup Abbess of Whitbv and Erndalc. Once into the straight Erndalc went fast to be in command inside the distance, but he had to be

kicked right out to score by half a length from Myth, who disputed every inch over the last furlong. Giving a brilliant display of jumping, the second fancy, Lord Val, won the Remuera Hurdles in good style. Lord Val. who was pulling hard, made play for a mile from Huskie. Prince of Orange, and Jolly Beggar. Huskie then had a turn in the lead, but Lord Val went up on the inside at the fence by the five furlongs, and jumped to the front again. Lord Val and Huskie kept close company to the last fence several lengths ahead of Jolly Beggar and Lord Val gained the ascendancy in the run from the last fence to win decisively from Huskie. Jolly Beggar who went gallantly with his big weight in the holding ground, was two lengths and a-half away third, and Master Musk was fourth, with Prince of Orange and Lap Up well beaten. The outsider of the field bar one, Irish Comet, was responsible for a surprise in winning the Great Northern Steeplechase, paying over a score. Saint Musk led the field for a round from the favourite, Valpeen, and Don Erma. Valpeen then assumed the lead, and was closely attended by Don Erma, with Erination. Saint Musk. Forest Glow, Allegretto, and Roxy the closest of the others. Irish Comet being well back commencing the last round. Valpeen was the leader, and he turned along the back three lengths ahead of Forest Glow. Erination, Don Erma, and Irish Comet, who had just come prominently into the contest, with Allegretto heading the others, who were falling away beaten. Irish Comet ran up to Valpeen going up the hill the last time, and they had the others well beaten, Forest Glow, Erination, Don Erma. and Allegretto being their closest followers Irish Comet began to draw away going down the hill, and he always had the measure of Valpeen after that to beat him decisively. There was a close contest for third and Allegretto, who was eight lengths away and very tired just defeated Don Erma. Finishing with great determination on the outside. Armacourt registered a surprise in winning the King George Handicap, paying double figures. Royal Dance made the pace a cracker from Enge and Mata Hari. and at the straight entrance he was just ahead of Enge, Mata Hari, and Versant, with De Friend, Armacourt (outside). Prince Acre, Tybalt, and Greek Gold bunched. A furlong from the post, Enge, Armacourt, and Prince Acre challenged, and in a great finish Armacourt won by half a head from Prince Acre, with Enge a similar distance away third. Versant was right up fourth, followed by De Friend, Day Wind, Tradesman, and Royal Dance, who were bunched. The form of the placed horses was good, and Versant ran another fine race. De Friend and Tradesman also shaped very creditably. Altogether, the latter was not really dangerous in the straight.

FITZROY HANDICAP, Ot 300sovs. One mile.

The light-weight High Star attempted to win the Panmure Hurdles from end to end. but he was outstayed in the run from the last fence by the second fancy. Windsor Lad, who gave a fine display of jumping and ran on really well. One of the finest finishes ever witnessed in a gentleman rider's race at Ellerslie was provided in the Carbine Plate, Tail Light and Small Boy deadheating for first, with Jewelled Girdle half a head away third. Tail Light jumped out smartly and made play early from Strathire and Jewelled Girdle. Three furlongs from home Jewelled Girdle joined Tail Light in the lead, and they came into the straight just ahead of Tip Toes and Small Boy, with Collision making a forward move. Over the last furlong the three place-getters were locked together, and it was a fitting finale to a fine dav's racing. Tip Toes was a good fourth, but Collision, who was fifth, did scarcely as well as expected. HANDICAPS FOR THIRD DAY (Per United Press Association) AUCKLAND, June 9. Croyden, improved by his race at Foxlon, won all the way in the Hack Steeplechase. Sporting Song made a big effort over the last three fences, and was on terms at the second last, but he could not hang on to the winner, who gave a superior exhibition of jumping. Platter was slower than usual at the jumps, but ran creditably. « Notium, with a change of riders, was made a hot favourite for the sprint, and won all the way. Taitoru moved up handily on the turn, but had no chance with the winner, who won on the bit. Winsome Lu was finishing on for a good third, with Collodian and Tonnerre next. Notium gave nothing a chance. Ethiop showed most improvement of the field in the June Hurdles, and won decisively. Beau Gallante made all the pace, and looked a likely winner until the last couple of fences, when Ethiop, who had been following him, went up. Journet, who had also been prominent, fell back. Ethiop lead Beau Gallante at the last fence, and ran on to win well from John Charles, who outstayed Beau Gallante. Red Manfred and Journet being next. John Charles seemed to make his run a bit late. Dictate, the favourite for the Hack Cup, made a great, bid for the honours, but after having every chance out near the front on the rails, and with the leaders, he was tackled in the straight by Brazen King. The public was treated to a good fighting finish between the brothers Morris, but Brazen King stuck out just too well. Chat, who had been last put of the straight, went on for a creditable third, and better placed early, would have been very handy. A number of the runners had no chance from the start, amongst them being Spender and Mvriam. but Taro and Flying Chief had every opportunity and so did Airing. All failed to run on. Clarion Call scored a pointless victory in the Wanganui Steeplechase. The onlv starter that was ever likely to trouble him was Brigadore. but the latter, after cutting out a solid second mile in front, fell at the second last fence when Clarion Call had headed him This left Clarion Call to run in over the last fence for an unchallenged win over Royal Banquet, who was soundly beaten and pulled up lame. Brigadore's showing was a good one for a novice. Pukeko was always well placed in the Connolly Handicap, and finished too well for Gold Mission and Tiger Gain who were near the front throughout. Tiger Gain obtained a good run on the rails to the straight. Mandamus had gone up very fast on the outside of the leaders approaching the turn and was actually first into the lead for the home turn, but his effort left him without a finishing run International got chopped out at the start and was well back early, but he made a forward move on the turn, though he never threatened danger. Pukeko won well, but Mandamus went forward too early.

Colleen Gain quickly ran to the front in the concluding event, but Te Huia, who had followed her into the straight, then wore her down for a narrow win. They had cleared right out from the others, of whom Parakino, Helios and Sporting Gift did best. Dawning Light got a bad passage. ASHBURTON TROTS TWOS LOOSE WINS STAKES GRAHAM DIRECT SUCCESSFUL (Per United Press Association) ASHBURTON, June 9. The trots were held in excellent weather before a very large attendance. With glorious weather to attract a big holiday crowd, large fields, close racing, and record totalisator figures, the Ashburton Trotting Club had a wonderful race meetinc Mr R. Semple and Mr P. C. Webb were among those present, the former making some complimentary remarks in the birdcage after the Sapling Stakes race. Lustre was the smartest out in the Longbeach Handicap, with Fluke, Jennv's Guy Beethoven, and Shadeland handy. Shadeland joined Lustre in the lead at the mile post, and a little further on Bon Chance took third place, with a gap to Fluke. Lord Ernleigh. and Nahlinga. who headed the others. Shadeland and Lustre were just clear of Bon Chance and Nahlinga at the home turn. Then Nahlinga ran up to the leaders, while Bon Chance and Fluke were handy. Nahlinga held his place to win decisively by a length from Fluke, while half a length awav Lustre stalled oft the breaking Jenny's Guy by a neck. Shadeland and Bon Chance were close up. The winner, by Travis Axworthy, is a six-year-old gelding and a good sort. . Wynan's nerformance to win the Trial Handicap was far above the average. Warwick ran across him at the start causing him to lose a lot of ground. He moved up after the halfmile to join in a bunch and he ran to the front when the straight was reached and won comfortably On several occasions he had lost a good chance by failing to go off smartly, but this time it was not his fault. He is only a three-year-old, and he is

good. Glen Travis and Chieftainess set the pace, Rhine Gold, Twenty Grand, Janet Gaynor, Locust, and Santa Fe being the others prominent most of the way. Chieftainness hung on for second place, beating Twenty Grand by half a length. Rhine Gold and Locust were close up. Graham Direct showed that he was back to his best by the style in which he won the King George Handicap. Smooger and Rocks Ahead led out from Gallant Knight, Grace M'Elwyn, Llewellyn's Pride, and Lucky Jack, while Rey Spec joined after the mile. Smooger retired at the six-furlong post. Rocks Ahead and Gallant Knight led round the home turn, Llewellyn's Pride, Rey Spec, and Bonny Azure being handy, with Tempest moving up. Then Graham Direct, who had been well back, put in his claim, and a fast run carried him to the front more than a furlong from the post, and he won easily. Bonny Azure finished solidly to gain second place by half a length from Llewellyn's Pride, who stalled off Tempest by a head. Gallant Knight was only half a length further back, with Rey Spec and Rocks Ahead next. Cloudy Range did not seem able to act on the track. The winner's performance was impressive. The New Zealand Sapling Stakes was a great race all the way, with an exciting finish-. Francisco was slow to get going. Three Bells and Twos Loose soon took charge from King's Jubilee, Bayard, and Horsepower, with Lord Zetland heading the others. After half a mile Sandusky started to improve his position. Horsepower was with Three Bells in the lead at the sixfurlong post, with Twos Loose, King's Jubilee, Bayard, and Sandusky handy. Horsepower led Three Bells and Twos Loose past the half-mile post. Sandusky was moving up at this stage, but met. with interference, which lost him some ground. He soon got going again, and a furlong from the post was challenging Horsepower and Twos Loose. . A fine struggle ended in Twos Loose beating Sandusky by a neck. Horsepower was a length further back, and four lengths away came Francisco—a great performance after being practically last all the way to the straight. Jackaranda and Parauri were next. Twos Loose, who also won the Nursery Stakes at the Timaru meeting in March, is owned by Mr G. Hudson (Otago), and he looks a solid customer likely to go on. At the same time, he was lucky to beat Sandusky, as there was no doubt the interference the latter suffered at the home turn cost him the race. Horsepower just failed in the last 50 yards. All the others were beaten with a furlong to go. M. B. Edwards has a wonderful record in this race. In the last five years he has won with War Buoy, Frisco Girl, and Twos Loose, and was second with Frisco Boy, while Gamble and Francisco were fourth. Harlequin and Sage King set the pace in the Acton Handicap, with Player handy from the start, while Blair Athol, U. Scott, and Dundee were close up after the half-mile. Player headed Sage King half a mile from home, and a little further on U. Scott and Blair Athol also challenged. U. Scott ran to the front when the straight was reached, and won easily, while Blair Athol worried Player out of second place in the last couple of strides. Sage King finished well in fourth place. Renown's Best, Dundee, and Greenmantle were close up. The winner, an American horse, is on the way to good class. Casanova broke at the start, while Kibo broke some gear and was pulled up. Bittersweet looked very unlucky to be beaten in the Mayfield Handicap, as, after breaking twice, first at the start and again after a furlong, she lost by only a neck. Flotsam soon took charge, but after two furlongs Lough Guv ran past him. with Garner and King's Guard heading the others. Bittersweet moved up along the back, and at the home turn was third,Kings Guard having joined Flotsam in the lead, while Airflow was moving up fast. In an exciting finish, King's Guard beat Bittersweet by a neck. • Airflow was two lengths back, and then came Raclaim and Garner. The winner was always going well. Waitaki Power and Olive King were soon joined in the front by Waipalu in the Tinwald Handicap. Waipalu took charge after two furlongs, Waitaki Power. Ace Pot, and Olive King heading the others at the mile post. Wee Wrack moved up along the back, and at the home turn was third, and Waipalu, Waitaki Power, and Olive King followed. In the run home, Waipahi easily held his place, winning by three lengths, while Waitaki Power hung on to beat Oversight, who came with a great challenge in the straight. Wee Wrack was close up. Waipahi is a smart pacer, but is rarely good oft the mark. The favourite. Bill 8., began slowly and seemed unable to get an opening for a run. It was not possible to see much or the Winter Handicap, which was run in the failing light. Navy Blue and Parisienne were the smartest out, but Sterling Lady headed them after a furlong, where Priceless, Encounter, and Aristotle were handy, with Nervie's Last not far away. There was no change in the leaders to the straight. Nervie's Last then moved up, but Sterling Lady beat him by two lengths. Double Great, who challenged in the straight, beat Encounter by a neck for third place. Parisienne failed to stay. The well-backed Southern Smile never got into the picture.
