GREEN ISLAND BOROUGH

MONTHLY COUNCIL MELTING

The monthly meeting of the Green Island Borough Council was held last night, the Mayor (Mr T. M'Ahan) presiding. There were also present; Crs G. Orange, T. Tomkins, J. C. Russell, J. A. R. Brown, A. D. M'Gregor, W. Dickinson, V. R. Pringle, and W. O. Smellie. FINANCE COMMITTEE The following recommendations were brought forward by the Finance Committee;—That the Dunedin Metropolitan Fire Board be urged to proceed with the erection of the new station at Green Island; that a donation of £2 2s be made to the Dunedin Citizens’ Dav Nursery; that the question of contributing towards the lighting of the school clock be deferred for one month; that the Perpetual Trustees Company, Ltd., be advised that the council was of the opinion that the necessity for the preparation of an urban farm land rating list for the borough did not exist; that the council subsidise the Poppy Day returns to March 31, 1938, up to £4O; that the question of proceeding with a council housing scheme be deferred for 12 months. The recommendations were adopted. PUBLIC WORKS COMMITTEE * The Public Works Committee recommended that the following works should be commenced: —Repairs to Jefcott street (entrance to property of Mrs M‘Kay); surfacing of Kirkland street, School street to garage of Mr D. Love; surfacing of Church street footpath, from Muir street to District road, preparatory to receiving permanent surfacing; surfacing of Mulford and Thoreau street footpaths, preparatory ’to receiving permanent surfacing; temporary surfacing of Bruce street and Scotland terrace; continuation of surfacing of Quarry road and District road to cemetery entrance. The committee also recommended that the engineer report on the petition to reconstruct North Taieri road, and that application be made to have Abbotsford road and North Taieri road to the borough boundary declared a main highway. The report was adopted. RESERVES COMMITTEE The Reserves and Cemetery Committee recommended that a meeting of all interested in effecting improvements at Miller Park be called for Monday, June 14. The report was adopted. WATER AND LIGHTING COMMITTEE The Water and Lighting Committee recommended that the question of lighting on the main highways be taken up with the Main Highways Board through 1 the Automobile Association at a meeting to be held next Tuesday. The report was adopted. ENGINEER’S REPORT The following report on the work done during the month was submitted by the borough engineer (Mr F. J. Williams); — Dunedin-Invercargill Highway No. 101.—The work done on the highway has consisted of repairing broken portions and cleaning water tables near the top of Look-out Point. Similar repair work will be continued during the incoming month, and the water tables should be cleaned out over most of the length. Green Island-Taien Mouth No. 232. The necessary repairs having been effected, the New Zealand Highway Constructors, Ltd., sealed the portion of this highway under the council’s control. Excellent results were obtained, except for a small strip near the bridge. The contractors will go over the work at the end of the period of maintenance and repair any portion which may require attention. A certificate of payment for 75 per cent, of the value of the work done is submitted for payment. Kaikorai Valley Highway No. 647. A considerable amount of work has been done on this highway, and the whole length was graded twice during the month. Screenings were spread, and the section near the sale yards was blinded with sand. A request was received to supply the Government liabilities as at March 31 on all highways, and the information has been obtained and forwarded to the representative, Main Highways Board. Dunedin. The engineer also submitted a report on the general work carried out, which comprised cleaning water tables, metalling and grading roads, and repairs to footpaths through the borough. The report was adopted.
