BOXING

MARTIN DEFEATS JENKIN (Per United Press Association) AUCKLAND, May 31, A professional welter-weight boxing contest to-night between Billy Martin (Australia) and Stan Jenkin (Oamaru) was won by Martin by a knock-out in the eighth round. Martin. was clearly the superior boxer from the outset and never at any stage was in danger. On the contrary,;after obtaining the early measure of his opponent. he permitted Jenkin .to . tap him on the head, realising that the New Zealander’s blows lacked; sting. There was only'a, fair attendance, and the public must have been disappointed with the contest, as it was too one-sided, to be entertaining. After concentrating mostly on body punching, Martin sent his opponent down for the count of seven, in the eighth round, and then finished him. with a.left, hook to the chin, Jenkin being counted out.
