The wages paid by and the working conditions in New Zealand dairy factories were discussed during the hearing of the Dominion dispute before the Conciliation Council today, over 360 factories being cited. The employees sought a five-day and a 40-hour week and the employers seasonal variations in the working week, ranging from 40 to 48 hours in butter factories and from 38 to 52 hours in cheese, casein, milk powder and condensed milk factories. The employees asked for wages ranging from £5 5s to £6 10s for assistants in butter and cheese factories and the employers offered £4 Is to £5 3s 6d. The question of exempting workers employed in herd testing from the scope of the award was referred to the Arbitration Court. The emnloyecs asked for three weeks’ holiday on full pay. After a full day’s hearing no agreement was reached on wages and hours or on other clauses of vital importance. The council is to resume this morning.
