HARRIERS

CAVERSHAM HARRIERS The Caversham Harrier Club held its annual Vice-presidents' Handicap (three miles and a-half) at St. Kilda on Saturday, the race also being a trial to pick a team to travel to Christchurch to compete in the' Kcnnett Cup Race. A good field of 42 runners faced the starter, Mr J. W. Tapp, who despatched the limit men, Hayman, Hood and Leckie, at 3 p.m., the rest of the field following at intervals, till 3i minutes later the scratch men, Donovan, Colston and Austin, left their marks. The course led from the St. Kilda tram terminus down Victoria road for some distance, and then a turn was made into Lovers' Lane, which was followed right up to the Cemetery. The harriers continued down Tahuna road and back on to Victoria road, finishing at the terminus agairi. The pace was fast from the start, and the limit men were soon displaced; and at the turn into Lovers' Lane Turner was leading, followed by Leckie, Hood and Gerrie. The placings alternated along the lane, with the back markers steadily making up ground. When the cemetery was reached Turner was still running well at the head of the field, with Gerrie and M'Gregor in close attendance. Some of the backmarkers were well up at this stage, A. J. Banin particular running easily. The leaders kept up a good, steady pace? and in a brilliant finish Gerrie prevailed over Turner by inches, with M'Gregor a yard back third, followed by Taylor, Honeybone and Barr. Results:—L. M'N. Gerrie 1, L. F. Turner 2, C. M'Gregor 3. Fastest times: G. R. Colston 17min 45sec, L. K. Donovan 17min 46sec, A. J. Barr 18min lOsec. The following have been selected to represent the club in the Kennett Cup Steeplechase at Christchurch next Saturday:— No. 1 Team.—G. R. Colston, L. K. Donovan, A. J.-Barr, S. J. Maddocks, L. L. Hebbard, S. I. George and L. F. Gerrie (emergency). No. 2 Team.-L. F. Gerrie, G: L. Austin, R. Abernethy, M. Butterfield, T. E. Taylor, S. J. Bartlett and A. G. Hebbard (emergency), CIVIL SERVICE HARRIERS The Civil Service Harriers held their Three-mile Railway Cup and Half-mile Handicap for the Colts at St. Kilda on Saturday. The senior event was the final race to Select a team to compete in the Kennett Cup race. The course led from the St. Kilda tram terminus down Victoria road for aquarter of a mile, when a turn was taken to the left until Lovers' Lane was reached. This was followed to the Anderson's Bay Cemetery and back on the road past Tahuna Park to the finish at the St. Kilda terminus. A field 0f.28 faced the starter (Mr H. M'Kenzie.. The limit men started off at a good pace, and were followed at intervals by the remainder of the field until the scratch man (R. Geddes) was started 2smin later. At the first turn into Lovers' lane K. Baird, off 2min 20sec. was in the lead, and, with the first mile passed M'Millan, Kirkwood, L. Greany, and W. M'Kinnon were steadily going through to the head of the field. At the cemetery gates, K. Baird, who was running strongly, still held the lead, with M'Millan, Richards, S. Asher, and N. Greany closing up rapidly. Barnes and Geddes,. the two back-markers, who had made fast time over the soft going in the lane, were now overhauling the leaders. Nearing the finish K. Baird, who had led practically all the way. put in a good run to finish first, about 10 yards ahead of L. M'Millan (who had put in a determined effort) followed closely by N. Greany and Richards. Results: K. Baird 1, L. M'Millan 2, N. Greany 3; fastest time: A. R. Geddes (15min 38Jsec) 1, J. G. Barnes (16min 4sec) 2, N. Greany (16min 9sec) 3, W. M'Kinnon (16min 14sec) 4. The following will represent the club in the Kennett Cup at Christchurch next Saturday:—A. R. Geddes, N. Greany, W. M'Kinnon, L. M'Millan, N. Coutts, and A. Kirkwood. The course for the colts' half-mile was along Victoria road towards St. Clair for a-quarter of a mile and back. The starter (Mr M'Kenzie) sent the field away to an excellent start, and the pace was on from the beginning. At the half-way mark Wilson led from Lucas, with M'Kersey and Belcher following closely. In the run to the finish, Wilson, who was running a fine race, increased his lead to win by 15 yards from Lucas, with Belcher, who had put in a good finish, about five yards away third. HANOVER BAPTIST AND BfORNINGTON An enjoyable combined run between the Hanover Baptist and Mornington Harrier Clubs was held on Saturday, from the Hanover Club's rooms. There was a fair muster from both clubs. The pack moved off along Cumberland street, turning through the Gardens and up to the top of Opoho. The new scenic road was followed from here to the end, where the runners split up into fast, medium, and slow packs. The fast pack, under Deputy Captain Hall (M.), proceeded down the hill to St. Leonards, where a long nonstop run was held home. The medium and slow packs, under Captain Taylor (M.) and Captain Gibson (H.), travelled through some slippery bush country and eventually landed out on the far side of Ravensbourne. Steady runs home were held by both packs from the Albany Street School. Ressuits: Fast pack—Crooke (M.) 1, Wilson (M.) 2, Ferry (M.) 3; medium pack —Moore (M.) 1, Hanley (M.) 2, Miller (M.) 3; slow pack—J. de Courcy (M.) 1, I. Gillan (M-> 2, R. Thompson (M.) 3. LEITH HARRIERS The Leith Harriers ran from the Anglican Boys' Home, Vauxhall, as the guests of Mr and Mrs Gerard. The trail led along the road from the home for a short distance, and some good cross-country was then traversed. After making a quick descent, the main road was reached. From this point a steady run was held to Waverley House, where two packs were formed, the fast pack, under Deputy Captain B. A. Timms, and the slow under Captain J. C. Thompson. There was no run home for the slow pack, but S. A. Watson and W. H. Masters were prominent throughout. The fast pack's run home resulted: S. Avent 1, R. MTCindlay 2, and D. V. Scott 3. DUNEDIN HARRIERS The Dunedin Harriers ran from Mrs Kennedy's residence, Marne street, Anderson's Bay on Saturday. The pack was under the charge of Captain Sturgeon and Deputy Captain Hill. The trail led along Summerville street, up on to the paddocks at Waverley, and then branched to the right on to Highcliff road. T. M'Donnell and L. Hill were running well together at the head of the pack. The trail continued on past the Soldiers' Monument as far as the radio station, and thence through the paddocks on the left of Highcliff road. The going was slippery downhill when the Portobello road was reached two packs were formed, Captain Sturgeon taking the fast pack and Deputy Captain Hill being in charge of the slow pack. F. Poole was sent out as pacemaker and he set a steady pace for a good part of the journey. W M'Leod, J. M'Laren, and L. Hill were running strongly together, and soon reduced the gap from the leaders. At Johnston's Jetty the pace was on, and the new mefnbers were teaming well The whistle was blown for the run home at White House, Waverley, the placed men being F. Mouat, J. M'Laren and L. Hill. The most prominent in the slow pack were E. Coomei, F. Poole, and T. M'Donnell. ANGLICAN HARRIERS The Anglican harriers ran from the George Street School on Saturday, when there was a fair attendance of members. The slow pack was under the whistle of Club Captain Burridge, and followed a trail from the school towards Woodhaugh, climbing the road and circling the reservoir.- Paddocks were crossed towards Wakari to Balmacewen road, which was followed past the golf links, thence into Cannington road. The return was made to the school by the Bullock Track and Duke street. In the run home Lorden was first from Maydon and

Gilchrist. A new member, J. C. Smitli, showed up well. The fast pack, under the whistle of Road Captain Curtis, had a solid training run as far as Sullivan's dam, returning by the same route. ST. KILDA HARRIERS A small attendance of St. Kilda harriers responded to the whistle ol Deputy Captain A. Carter on Saturday. A fast pace was set from the Mornington School to the Roslyn Mills and up the hill to Wakari. Some muddy country was traversed until the water race was reached. From the water race the pack followed a track emerging at the Green Island railway station. The, trail then led along the Main South road to Burnside and aloug the Kaikorai Valley road. A. Smith won the run home.
