CORONATION BALL AT WAIKOUAITI

Coronation day was celebrated in Waikouaiti by means of a ball given by the benedicts and spinsters of the district. The hall was decorated in the loval colours of red. white and blue, and to those who looked up the ceiling appeared to be a huge Union Jack. At intervals around the room Union Jacks held souvenir balloons while fronds of fern made a welcome splash of green. The spotlight was a novel feature and greatly appreciated by the younger dancers. Six novelty dances added to the enjoyment of the evening, and for the Coronation walb Mr and Mrs G. D. Payne were hailed as king and queen of the ball. Mr A. Fell, the Mayor, made suitable re-

marks, and presented them with then crowns and suitable prizes. Mr and Mrs S. Payne were second, and also received their prizes. Winners of the other novelty dancesW ere:—Monte Carlo, Miss V. Ferguson and Mr A. Stone; railway dance, Mrs M Payne and Mr M. Nichol; statue waltz Miss L. Dempster and Mr Stone; lucky spot, Mr C. Black and partner; lucky balloon, Miss York and Mr Stewart Mr G. Griffiths was a capable M.C, until midnight, and was then relieved by Mr S. Hayden and Mr J. Phillips. At 2.15 a.m. the popular dance band played "Auld Lang Syne," and the dancers regretfully brought the evening to a close.

Hallum, black lace and georgette; and E. Griffiths, black figured georgette. Misses F. Johnstone, black tulip taffeta; V. Ferguson, royal blue taffeta; M. Hall, China blue satin; T. Shand, cherry velvet; C. Diack, pink crepe: N. Fisher, floral crepe; S. Ferguson, white satin; M. Park, pink, with silver thread; J. Ferguson. Coronation red crepe; M. Dempster, black and oyster taffeta; I. Ryder, windswept satin; A. Ferguson, Kenya red marocain: B. Irvine, white lace; M'Dougal, floral voile; M. Kirkwood, lemon organza, with green lace; M.
