Racing into Form The mill-wheel cannot grind with the waters that are past, and horses should win in the present when they can and not be kept waiting for the more problematical chance in the future. At the present time there are perhaps a few horses that are racing into condition, and hence unable to produce their best form. This is the chance for a horse in racing condition, because a good horse is not a good one in racing merit when short of condition, and perhaps being trained in races instead of being trained to race. Opportunity and Merit Apropos of a gtallion making a good sire if he got the opportunities, it must not be overlooked that many get the opportunity but fail to make ' good. When a horse has been at the stud for several years and his stock, winners or losers, are few and far between, then it may be taken for granted that something is wrong somewhere. It may be simply a case of partial impotence. During a horse's first two or three seasons at the stud, if any claim to conheld, then he should get a chance ill the owner does not keep him out of publicity. After three years his stock should start to prove themselves, and as the best proof of a pudding is intae eating, so also the merit and promise of the stock is the best test of the sire. A Progressive Idea

At the annual meetings of the various clubs | a vote of thanks is sometimes recorded to the press. At the next Racing Conference the Wellington Racing! Club is bringing up a remit that all nominations and, where possible, acceptances should ?.,clpse at, 5 p.m.7. At present the weights for some of the days at Trentham.appear at, 8 p ; m., arid acceptances at" 9 p.m.' This means.that the .acceptances are available about|9.3o; Then the press come in and; : unless one .is clever 4 enough to select eight winners' in abdut eight minutes,' tr)e scribes are at work for another hour or so., It is all. in the day-sworC but "it means from about 10; a.m. to j 10.30 p.m. The acceptances land in Dunedin and elsewhere at a very late hour,' and if clubs wish to show a practical appreciation of the assistance df the press they-shoujd cut out the;antfquated idea of closing, nominations and acceptances at the late hour; of 9 o.m. When the matter was previously discussed at a .Racing Conference it yrak stated that the earlier hour did n«t suit some clubs, but that is no reason why the majority should not adopt it. ~., .•";.-'"./-.' ■*.;■ +—^— — : v' ■-:,..
