NOTES AND COMMENTS Several matters of importance in the main to further the game where possible are to be discussed at the annual meeting of the New Zealand Association this week. The consideration of making a grant, if funds permit, to assist in meeting expenses of the winners of the North Island and South Island Championships to attend the New Zealand Championship meeting is to be discussed. Also to affirm the principle of sending New Zealand championship winners on a tour of associations, immediately following the New Zealand tournament. At a recent meeting of the Management Committee of the Otago Association, it was decided to change the official ball to the New Villa, the change to take place immediately. This is to be the official ball for the South Island and Otago Championships, and the change now will give prospective entrants time to get used to it. The change also brings us in line with the North Island associations. On the fourth night of play in the A Grade, Pioneer went down to Y.M.C.A. 13—19. The Y.M. team was without Pollock and Dunbar, who were replaced by Pitkethley and Allan. Miller, for Y.M., won seven games, losin? one to Martindale 20—22. Boyd, for Y.M., who won six games, is shaping well and shows distinct promise of developing into a leading player. It was rather a surprise to see Mayfair trounce Y.M.D. 20—12. Mayfair outplayed their opponents and were top good all round. Laidlaw, for Mayfair, won six games, losing two to Paape. He was right on form and was his side's best player. Everson played best for Y.M.D., while Harrop was right off, winning only two games. Dunedin had no difficulty in disposed of St. Clair 24—8. Ramsay, for St. Clair, played well to win five games, including two off Stanton. Brown, for Dunedin, only lost one game to Robertson. Friends won easily from Paramount 25—7. W. and M. Friend won all their games without any difficulty, and Knowles lost one to Otway. The two leading teams in the B Grade are Bennetts and St. Patrick's with four points each, both having easy wins over Paramount and South End II respectively. The next in position are Dunedin and St. Clair, with three wins each. • In the C Grade, St. Patrick's II had a narrow win over Dunedin by 42 points, while Residents, without Blair, had a narrow win over Zenith 18—14. The three leading teams in this division are Residents. Bennetts, and Chevrolet I. The Ladies' Grade is providing good matches. D.S.A. I defeated Paramount I 19—13, this giving the D.S.A. team a lead of one point over Red Triangle and Paramount I, who are next with three points each. Miss Lock, for D.S.A., played well, losing a game each to Misses M. and A. Guy. St. Patrick's went down to Red Triangle 12—20. Miss Davis played more to last year's form, losing only one game to Miss M. Fogarty. Although there are not the same number of challenges on the association ladder as last year, the standard is somewhat higher, and some excellent games are resulting. During the week, C. Claridge challenged Smyth and won 19—21.. 21—14, 21—15. G. Claridge and A. Barclay held their positions against Laidlaw and Paape respectively, while Smyth lost his place to Brown. In three good games, Miller lost top place to Pollock 11—21, 22—20, 17—21. Pollock drove consistently and made no mistakes. The present placings are:—Pollock, Miller, Harrop, Hall. G. Claridge, Laidlaw, Stanton, A. Barclay, Paape, C. Claridge, Brown, and Smyth. .
