WOMEN'S INSTITUTES

Reports ot meetings oi branches are reanested but they should be furnished promptly, for the uublication ol reports that are not suonlied within a week from the date of the meeting cannot be promised At the May meeting of the Heriot Women's Institute Mrs King gave a report of the annual South Otago Federation meeting at Balclutha. The motto was " There is nothing so kingly as kindliness and nothing so royal as truth," and the roll call "A book I have enjoyed and something about it. The social item, a knitting competition, was supplied by Miss I. Patterson. A home science box on " Smocking" was demonstrated by Miss L. Moncur. The competition for best bloom was won by Mrs O. Brownlie and Miss G. Findlay, and the competition for eggless cake by Mrs G. Patterson, with Mrs M. Herbert and Mrs G. A. Haugh second. In the hot water bag competition Mrs M. Herbert was first, Mrs Sinclair second and Mrs G. Sim third. The hostesses were Mesdames G. N. Haugh and O. Brownlie and Misses G. Findlay and L. Moncur. The- May meeting of Green Island Institute was held on May 18 in the Masonic Hall. The president (Miss M'Lean) occupied the chair. Miss M'Lean, delegate to the Mid-Otago Federation, reported on the meeting. A demonstration on flowers made from wood pulp was given by Miss M'Lean. The convener of social items was Mrs W. Miller. Mrs Bulger contributed a pianoforte solo. A competition for a thrift article was won by Mrs Mason, with Mrs Miller second. In the knitting competition Mrs Miller was first and Mrs Callendcr second. The hostesses were Mesdames Wilkie. Barclay and Callender and Misses Kirkland and Walker. At the monthly meeting of the Kakanui Institute, Mrs J. Rusbatch presided. The motto was " Don't always say what you know, but always know what you say," and the roll call was " Impressions of Coronation Day." The competitions resulted as follows: — Best bloom—Mrs Cole 1, Miss Cleverley 2; three fancy biscuits—Mrs T. Wilson and Miss Jean Wilson (equal) 1. Miss Cleverley 3. The hostess was Miss Cleverley. At the meeting of the AwamoaAlma Institute, Miss Ross (president) occupied the chair. ..The motto was "He that loses wealth loses much; he that loses a friend loses more; but he that loses courage loses all." The roll call was "A Kitchen Hint." The hostesses were Mesdames Needs, Cowan,

and Morrison. Two competitions were arranged by the Misses Martin, the first, " Finding the names of streets in Oamaru," being won by Mrs Cowan and Mrs Nichols, and the other. " Jumbled towns," by Mrs Marshall and Miss Fulton. .■;: :',: >|t The May meeting of the Dunback Institute was held in the Dunback Hall. Miss Bell presided. The motto was "When pain and anguish wring the brow, a ministering angel thou." Miss G. M'lntosh gave a report on the federation meeting. Miss Tennent. matron of Dunedin Hospital, gave an interesting talk. The results of the competitions were:—Open jam tart, flakey—Mrs Farquharson 1, MrsMatheson 2; handkerchief from salt bagMrs Farquharson 1. Mrs Hewett 2. The hostesses were Mesdames Hewett and Chaston and Misses Stenhouse and Deem. ' Miss Murray presided over the meeting of the Mosgiel Institute on Monday. The' motto was "It is not the future which is to make us, but we that are to make the future." A welcome was extended to one new member. A lecture on "The care of the hands and the feet" (A.C.E. box scheme) was delivered by the presi-

dent. A competition was held and won by Mrs W. M. Taylor, after which there was a "bring and buy" sale. During the evening Mrs M'Millan contributed several solos. The hostesses were Mrs K. Greaves and Miss I. Gibson.

The Howard Hall was decorated for the seventh birthday party of the Arundel Institute. The first part of the evening took the form of a concert, which included action songs by the Arowhenua Maoris, and sketches and charades by the members. The cutting of the birthday cake was entrusted to Mrs M'Master, the oldest member. The cake was made by Mrs M'Donald and decorated by Miss M'Donald. Misses H. Pithie and D. Johnston presented Mrs M'Master and Mrs Wooding with bouquets, and congratulations were extended to the institute by Mrs Rehu, on behalf of the Arowhenua Institute. During the evening toys were presented to the children. if. ■{ * At the May meeting of the Sherwood Downs Institute, Mrs M. B. Reid presided. A letter, describing her trip to England was received from Mrs Harper. A golden thread travel talk was given by Miss Reid, her subject being "Africa." Community singing of Empire songs took the place of the musical items. Miss Macdonald demonstrated the making of a miniature garden, an indoor decoration for winter months. Flowers made from wood fibre were demonstrated by Mrs I. B. Crampton. The competition winners were Mesdames Ross. Bray, Mackenzie, Gray, and Anniss, and Miss Scott. The hostesses were Mesdames Ross, Gibson, and W. P. Reid.
