FORESTRY WORKERS AND THE BASIC WAGE
TO THE EDITOR Sir,—When Mr Justice Page fixed the basic wage at £3 16s per week I understood that it applied to all adult workers covered by an award or an agreement. Now. if this is so, why is it that workers employed by the Forestry Department under an agreement with the New Zealand Workers' Union are paid (for a 40-hour week) £3 15s, Is per week less than the amount fixed by the court? As other emnloyers have to pay the full rate, is it right that a Government department can ignore the court's ruling and get away with it? Is it a case of do. as I say not do as I do; or is the Minister in charge of this department (Mr Langstone) too bus-> lecturing the Maori race on the evils of strong drink to give any consideration to such a small matter as the basic wage.—l am, etc., Wm. G. Watson. Naseby. May 24.
