CHANGE OF NAME
CHILDREN'S REST HOME DECISION BY NARROW MAJORITY By a majority of one. a poorly-at-tended meeting of subscribers of the Children's Rest Home last night decided to change the name of the home to Dunkley's Children's Rest Home (Residential An amendment, that the name should be altered to include the words " Hill Jack Memorial Home," was defeated. On behalf of Sir Percy Sargood, who was not present, Mrs Dunkley moved "That the name of the home be changed to Dunkley's Children's Rest Home (Residential Nurseries). Incorporated." The motion was seconded by Mr A Kent. Mr F. W. Knight rose to a point ot order, stating that subscribers should have been notified of a motion that meant an alteration to the constitution. Bishop Fitchett, who presided, said he was in agreement with Mr Knight, but under the rules such notification was not necessary. Mr W. E. Earnshaw moved as an amendment:—-" That the name of the home be changed to the Children's Rest Home and the Hill Jack Memorial Home (Residential Nurseries), Incorporated." The proposed change of name* Mr Earnshaw said had arisen out of the fact that the committee had deemed it necessary to include the words "residential nurseries" in order that it might be safeguarded. At present anyone could start a similar home in opposition. The amendment had' been considered as a motion at a meeting of the committee, with the present motion as an amendment, and on the casting vote of the chairman had been sent forward for consideration at the annual meeting. Sir Percy Sargood had now brought forward his amendment as a motion. Mr Knight seconded the amendment. Bishop Fitchett said that while it would be a good thing to have Mr Dunkley's name perpetuated, as he had done good work, he saw a disadvantage. The home was really the Dunedin Rest Home, and, if they put anyone's name in front of it, they were suggesting that it was a private concern. That would invite opposition. On a show of hands the amendment was lost, the motion being carried by seven votes to six. The chairman: I consider it a great pity to change the name on such a small majority.
