WAIMATE Rugby Sub-union Has the Pirates Football Club been disbanded or has the club merely withdrawn its team from the sub-union's competitions while retaining its identity? According to the interpretation placed by the Management Committee of the Waimate Sub-union at a meeting on Monday evening on a letter from tiie Pirates Club notifying the withdrawal of the team from the junior competition, the club is still in existence and consequently all Pirates players wishing to play for other clubs will require clearances from the subunion. A' handsome silver cup for competition in the Third Grade was presented to the sub-union by Mr W. Forsyth, who asked that the trophy be presented to the team scoring the most tries during the season. The draw for Saturday resulted:— Senior.—Huimai v. Old Boys, No. 2 ground, 3 p.m.; Southern v. Makikihi, No. 1 ground, 3 p.m. Junior.—-Makikihi v. School, No. 2 ground, 1.30 p.m.; Southern v. Old Boys, No. 1 ground, 1.30 p.m.; Huimai a bye. Third Grade.—High School v. Old Boys, No. 3 ground, at 3 p.m.; High School v. Lower was in the chair. An invitation from Timaru Lodge was accepted, and the necessary transport arrangements are being made. Sick pay still continues to be very heavy. The return " 500 " match, Railway v. Druids, will be played in the Railway Social Hall on Tuesday, June 1. The following officers were elected for the half-yearly term:—A.D., Bro. Barrows; V.A., Bro. Personal A resident of the district for many years, Mr W. C. Arkle, solicitor, has lately removed to Dunedin. It is not Mr Arkle's intention to leave the district permanently. Mr T. Macassey, of Messrs Donald Reid and Co., is at present relieving the local agent, Mr Ray Williams, who has gone to Oanjaru for a short period. KYEBURN Miniature Rifle Shooting The weekly shoot of the Kyeburn Miniature Rifle Club was held on the club range on Tuesday. The winner of the Preston rifle button was A. H. RANFURLY Rifle Shooting This week's weekly shoot of the Ranfurly Miniature Rifle Club again attracted a large attendance of members. The average of the first 10 men showed a slight improvement over last week's score, being 77.8. J. C. Kearney, who has been a very consistent shot this year, again won the button for the best score off the rifle,

Golf The Maniototo Golf Club was favoured with fine weather on Saturday last, when a men's Medal Match was played. The scores generally were the bfjst returned so far this season, the winner being Dr Kidd, with a score of 82—14—68. In the ladies' Medal Match played over nine holes the winner proved to be Mrs Jamieson, with a score of 49—11—38. On Saturday next the first round of the Black and White Cup competition will be played. The draw for partners will take place as usual at the club house at 1.30 p.m. Football With the first round of the Maniototo Rugby Sub-union's competition now completed, Ranfurly has not yet been defeated. On Saturday last Becks made a bold bid for the Richard Young Banner and White Hprse Cup, .Ranfurly winning by a narrow margin of 6 points to 3. The game from start to finish was very fast and open, Ranfurly opening the score when Forrester notched a good try as the result of a passing rush. Becks evened up by its half-back beating the opposition badly to score wide out. Shortly after, Moyle, from a scrum, scored to give Ranfurly a winning lead. In the only other match of the competition played, Ida Valley defeated Waipiata by 12 points to 3. EASTERN SOUTHLAND Personal The Right Rev. T. H. Roseveare, moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand, who is at present on a tour of the South Island, is visiting Eastern Southland. The Farmers' Union The annual meeting of the Gore branch of the New Zealand Farmers' Union was held on Tuesday afternoon. The president, Mr R. L. Reid. occupied the chair, and there was a fair attendance of members present. The secretary reported that there was a very satisfactory credit balance. The election of officers resulted as follows: — President, Mr R. L. Reid; vice-presi-dent. Mr J. A. Johnston; secretary and treasurer. Mr S. C. Bowmar; auditor, Mr .1. dimming; executive—Messrs H, E. The committee will be elected at the next meeting, which. is to be held at an early date. • KUROW Heavy Rain The heaviest fall of rain since July 17, 1929, took place on Saturday night and Sunday morning. A total of 171 points fell for 14 hours, compared with 221 points on July 17, 1929. During the week-end a total of 181 points of rain fell. These figures were supplied by Mr T. 0. H. Tripp, Glen Gary Station, Hakataramea. Rugby Football Ngapara visited Kurow on Saturday last, a fast and interesting game resulting in a win for the visitors by nine points to three. Pirates (Hakataramea) visited Duntroon on Saturday, and after a fairly <jood game, the home team won by six points to three. Valedictory A farewell social was held on Saturday evening at the residence of Mr and Mrs Dean, Waitaki Hydro, in honour of Mr and Mrs Tartalena, who are leaving the district shortly. The evening was spent in games and cards. Mr Tartalena delighted the company with several songs. Mr White, on behalf of Mr Dean, who was unfortunately called on duty, made the farewell speech, and everyone joined in singing " For They Are Jolly Good Fellows," which brought a pleasant function to a close.
