PORT CHALMERS NEWS
mi ■■■" ■' PROGRESSIVE LEAGUE The annual meeting of the Port Chalmers Progressive League was held last night, Mr J. Morgan occupying the chair. There was a small attendance of members. The annual report stated that the league had every reason to be proud of its year's activities, as several useful works had been effected through the efforts of the league, and in conjunction with the Borough Council. Tne cash book showed a credit balance of 10s, a slight decrease from last year, effected by heavier expenditure. The league's listed membership now stood at 38, an increase on the previous vear's total. Although meetings have hot been held as regularly as might have been desired, the league had. nevertheless, been successful in having various improvements made. The riding of bicycles by youths was brought before the council, which had taken steps to notify the schools and police. The Port Chalmers-Waitati highway (borough section) had been vastly improved, and the council had intimated its intention of maintaining the surface. Efforts had again been made to have the Quarry road widening work completed; The Works Committee of the council had the matter in hand. The trees at Mr T. Wilson's corner in Reynoldstown had been a source of danger to motorists, and had been topped to improve motorists vision. Efforts were made to have penny-in-the-slot telephones installed about the town, also a reduction of 101 l fees. The council had been negotiating, but had not as yet achieved success. The council had intimated its willingness to co-onerate in the matter of bringing before the Otago Expansion League and Tourist Publicity Department the advantages of including the Dunedin-Port ChalmersWaitati highway in future literature issued in respect of scenic drives on the outskirts of the city. A recent copy to hand from the Expansion League gave some fine views of Port Chalmers and wharf and docking facilities. Representations had been made to have Allen highway tarsealed to abate the dust nuisance caused by heavy vehicular traffic. Certain sections had been attended to, but again operations were restricted by shortage of borough funds. The necessary topping of trees in Wickliffe terrace had been completed, and an appreciable improvement effected. The Otago Harbour Board had been approached with a view to having Goat Island planted with native trees and shrubs as a sanctuary for native birds. The board was 3vmnathetic. but advised that the island was under the jurisdiction of the Marine Department, the parking of cars in the railway coal siding causing inconvenience to legitimate users was objected to, and efforts made to correct the matter through the Railways Department. The improvement at the Cairn would be much appreciated by motorists. During the year representatives from the council had attended a meeting urging the league's co-operation in favour of having the St. Leonards-Sawyers Bav railway duplication completed The adoption of the report was moved by Mr W. G. Love, and the motion was carried without discussion It was agreed to hold over the election of officers till a later date. Reference was made to the danger incurred by pedestrians using the road between the bridge and Sawyers' Bay on wet nights, and it was stated that under these conditions motorists had little chance of seeing people on the road It was contended that a footpath was urgently required, and it was decided to communicate with the Automobile Association and other interested bodies seeking their support for a proposal to have a footpath formed. PERSONAL Mr R. S. Fullerton. of Port Chalmers, will leave to-day for Wellington to join the Maunganui as ship's electrician.
