"THE GALLANT STUDENT"

TO THE EDITOR

Sir, —Last week we were exhorted by " Sport" in exultant vein to cheer for the "gallant students," the worldbeaters. But alas for the brevity of human conquest and fame, these mighty victors have fallen, and "oh what a fall was there, my countrymen! " There is no disgrace in defeat; it is the fate sooner or later of all who aspire to the laurel wreaths of fame, but premature shouts of victory and exultation arouse nothing but derision when a defeat so complete follows so closely on Jhe wild cheers for a brief and easy victory. Humility.
