THE Otago Daily Times. "Inveniam viam aut faciam." [Established November 15, 1861.] DUNEDIN, SATURDAY, MAY 26, 1866.

SEVENTY-ONE YEARS AGO

i. . . It is somewhat surprising 'that with the advantages of ground .ascertained to b& rich, :and :with diggings in such Variety'as tO; suit every description . of. /miner— f rom the capitalist, whq is prepared to invest in undertakings likely to be to.' 'him.''who prefers working oh his ,ftwn. ; h'ook with tub and cradle, —the .'Gqld Fields of Otago are not more ■ eagerly sought after. For those j who prefer the independence of "shallow sinking, Macraes Flat offers its inducements. True, there are drawbacks to it, but under any circumstances, the united testimony -,of Surveyors and Wardens proves that-the average rate of wages in Otago. •is' much above that paid to any other known gold-producing country, with provisions at the rate at, which they are procurable here. That there are exceptional rates paid in certain places under extraordinary circumstances may be true; but such instances no more prove the general prosperity of a country than the finding'of a pocket of gold indicates the general richness of the district. On the Wakatip Gold Field the wages are stated to average L 4 10s per' week: and though in. some other, districts they are quoted somewhat .lower, it may be assumed as a" rule that the wages in Otago are i above an ounce of gold per week. ,v We can 'but repeat our surprise that with this fact before us the tide of immigration has not long since set in this direction.

The "Oamaru Times" of the 24th says —"A gentleman in town has received a communication from a friend connected with the Victorian Acclimatisation Society, urging upon our Association the desirability of taking steps to introduce The 'King of fishes.' the salmon, into our streams. . . . We hope the society will be backed up. vigorously by the inhabitants in this important question."

Thj annual general meeting of the Northern Pastoral and Agricultural Association took place in the Northern Hotel, Oamaru. on Saturday last, at 2 o'clock. The treasurer stated that the balance to the credit of the Association was LI 2s lOd. The receipts having been L 363 7s 3d, and the disbursements L 362 4s sd. Office bearers were elected for the ensuing year, and resolutions were, passed for instituting a ram fair, open to the flock-owners of Otago. Southland, and Canterbury on stated conditions. It was also decided to forward samples of wool exhibited at the wool show to the Exhibition of Wool to be held in London, and a subcommittee was appointed to' make arrangements for the shp.Wi • .

Information has been received in town that the Steeple Cliase for the Canterbury Cup was won by Jessie, and thr.t Musician came in second. (BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH.) (from our own correspondent.,) CLYDE, Friday. The Queen's Birth Day ball and concert at the Victoria Theatre, for the school fund, proved a great success. A jockey club has been formed in the district. Mr J. G. Glassford was chosen president; Mr J. Hazlett, vicepresident. A crushing of ninety tons of quartz, by the Criterion Company, yielded 1430 z. of gold. : . .
