PROPOSED CIVIC SQUARE

QUESTION OF A NAME EARLY SETTLERS’ RECOMMENDATION * That if, as has been proposed, the old telegraph office is demolished and a civic square established on the site, the square should be named Cargill square, was the opinion expressed last evening at the annual meeting of the Otago Early Settlers’ Association. The president (Mr W. J. Strong) brought forward 'a recommendation from the committee that this question should be considered by the meeting, and after a brief discussion the majority of those present agreed that Cargill square would be the most suitable title. Mr W. H. Ferens suggested Wickliffe square as a suitable name, saying that this would commemorate the arrival of the first ship on March 23, 1848. Mr D. J. Caldcr reminded the meeting that it had not yet been definitely decided whether the old telegraph office was to be demolished. If it were, he thought that the' square should be called Cargill square. Mr J. Wilson: That would certainly be the most appropriate name. This view was supported by Mr H. Bennett, who said it was possible that If the telegraph office were demolished and the square established. Cargill’s Monument would be removed. If. therefore, the square were named as suggested, there would still be something to perpetuate the name of Captain Cargill, A vote was then taken, and it was decided that the association recommend the City Council, if the proposed square becomes an accomplished fact, to call it Cargill square.
