OBITUARY

MR J. E. ROBERTSON The death occurred at his residence, Roseneath, Sawyers’ Bay, on Monday, of Mr J. E. Robertson. Born in Victoria 75 years ago, he landed with his parents as an infant at Port Chalmers in 1863, his father (Captain Robertson) being a seafaring man. It was his early desire to take up a business career, and at the age of 13 years he commenced butchering, with the result that, while still a young man, he was able to establish the business which, almost up to the time of his death, he successfully conducted at Port Chalmers. As a buyer he was well and very favourably known amongst graziers, auctioneers, stockmen and fellow-tradesmen for upwards of 40 years. Mr Robertson had lived for the last 35 yeai’s or so at Roseneath, Sawyers’ Bay,, where his wife predeceased him 34 years ago. He is survived by three sons —Messrs E. J. Robertson, John Robertson and Geoffrey Robertson —who are conducting the business, and by a daughter, Mrs W. L. Booth, who resides at Whangarei. He was of a quiet and unassuming disposition, but was kindly and generously disposed and of the strictest integrity in business. His remains were interred in the Port Chalmers Cemeterl. Mr A. D. Robertson, student missioner of the Sawyers’ Bay Presbyterian Church, officiated at the graveside, and the cortege was one of the largest seen in the district for many years.
