AMERICAN WAR MACHINE
STRENGTH,OF AIR ARM TEST DISPLAY ORDERED WASHINGTON, April 9. (Received April 11, at 8 p.m.) The War Department has ordered the concentration 244 army combat planes in California for a month in May to test the strength of the organisation. The personnel will include 430 officers and 2500 other ranks. The total of 244 represents actual fighting strength. There are 1500 planes serviceable, but these include several hundred obsolescent types and training planes, and 100 assigned to the reserve and not used by regular Air Force units. Military experts have been upset by reports from Europe, and decline to state whether the United States is fifth or sixth among the world Powers.
