ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES

DEATH AFTER MOTOR ACCIDENT DRIVER EXONERATED A verdict that death was due to shock and to contusion of the brain and that no blame was attachable to the driver of the car, was returned by the district coroner (Mr E. C. Bathurst) at the inquest at Ashburton on Wednesday on the body of Robert Mason, aged 64, who was struck by a car driven by Mr F. R. Brebner, of Dunedin, on the Main South road, near Fairton, on March 27. Frederick Robert* Brebner said that when his car lights revealed the man he was staggering from the left toward the middle of-the road. Mason was struck by the left-hand front mudguard and head lamp. When witness picked him up he wai unconscious and there was a strong smell of liquor about him. Dr B. G. Spiers, house surgeon at the Ashburton County Hospital, gave evidence as to the injuries, and stated that Mason’s breath smelt of alcohol, KICKED BY A HORSE Kicked by a. horse while he was working at Miller’s Flat, Albert Holden, aged 18 years, who resides at 80 Loyalty street, South Dunedin, was admitted to the Dunedin Hospital at 7.30 p.m. yesterday, suffering from a fracture of the right leg. INJURIES TO BACK William Hodgson, aged 48, residing at 490 C King street, was admitted to the Hospital at 5.30 p.m. yesterday, with injuries to his back, resulting from a fall. RAILWAY EMPLOYEE INJURED When he jumped from an engine in the railway yards yesterday morning, a railways employee named Colin Morris, aged 19 years, suffered a factored left femur, and was admitted to the Dunedin Hospital at 10.15. The injured youth resides at 58 Glasgow street. INJURIES TO CHEST Alfred Gaul, aged 26 years, who lives at 9 Hayward street, was admitted to the Hospital at 11 o’clock yesterday morning, suffering from injuries to his chest. He was jacking up a motor car at Otago Motors, Ltd., when the car slipped off the jack and struck him.
