BALCLUTHA Golf Club The annual meeting of the Balclutha Golf Club on Thursday night attracted an attendance of 24, and considerable enthusiasm was shown in regard to the coming season. The balance sheet showed a credit of £4l 14s sd, which was considered to be very satisfactory, considering that the clubhouse and the greens had been kept in good order and that everything was in readiness to start the season. Mr R. R. Grigor was re-elected president, Mr T. M. Thompson vice-president, Mr J. D. Landels club captain, Mr A. K. Baxter secretary, and Mr Lothian auditor. The following committee was elected: — Messrs W. Jolly, G. H. Mitchell, and J. Clark. The opening date was fixed for Saturday, April 17. A Glenomaru Farewell Mrs George Wilson and Miss Olive Wilson were entertained at farewell functions at Glenomaru before their departure from the district. In the afternoon the women’s organisations entertained Mrs and Miss Wilson and presented them with mementoes, while at night, in the Glenomaru Hall, there was a large and representative gathering to bid them farewell and to mark the appreciation of the whole district of the part they had played in promoting its amenities. The Rev. Mr M’Donald occupied the chair. During the evening a first-class musical programme was given. Mr Peter Laughton, on behalf of the district, presented Mrs Wilson with a Morris chair and cushions, and Miss O. Wilson with a brass fire set and screen. Tribute was paid to the special ability Miss Wilson had displayed as organiser of the flower show and other local functions. Mrs Wilson intends to reside at Pounawea. A Popular Vicar The Rev. D. Hillman, who has been vicar of St. Mark’s Anglican Church, Balclutha, for the past three years, was met by the congregation and adherents at a function in St. Mark’s Hall on Thursday night, on the eve of his departure for his native city of Bristol, England, where he will take up parochial duties. The popularity of the vicar was shown by the large attendance and the many striking tributes paid to the way he had fulfilled his duties while in Balclutha. Dr Johnston (Owaka) occupied the chair and made the presentation to Mr Hillman of a wallet of notes. Mr Robert Newson (people’s warden), Mr Kee (Clydevale), and Mrs N. Bell (Balclutha), the latter representing the Women’s Guild, also spoke. Songs were sung by Mr Edwards, and Miss Hazel Wallace gave a recitation. Mr Hillman’s successor at Balclutha is the Rev. Mr Boyd-Bell, of Inglewood,- Taranaki. PALMERSTON The Coronation Celebrations Two meetings of borough councillors, associated with members of the Waihemo County Council, have been held lately in connection with celebrating the Coronation. At each meeting the Mayor (Mr W. B. Galloway) presided. A tentative programme has been drawn up as follows:—On Tuesday, May 11, the Borough Council will entertain the school children of the borough and district at a free screening of pictures, to commence at 2.30. The headmasters of the adjacent schools have been requested to make arrangements for the conveyance and control of the children under their charge. On the morning of Wednesday May 12, the school children will be addressed at the school on subjects fitting to the occasion. The various religious denominations intend hold-

ing a combined service in the Coronation Hall at 10.30 a.m., and Archdeacon Button has been asked to give an address. On Wednesday afternoon a grand procession will be held, consisting of Pipe Band, school children, Boy Scouts, Girl Guides, and returned soldiers, followed by decorated motor cycles, cycles, motor cars, and trade vehicles. This decision was reached at a spund-table conference of members from all clubs called by the Southern Club to consider the position. An alternative proposal, that the Glenavy players combine with Pirates, who last year fielded a junior team, and form another senior team, was ruled out by the expressed preference of the Glenavy players present to join up with the Southern Club. The decision reached at the meeting has now been ratified by the sub-union. Hook Rifle Club At the annual meeting of the Hook Miniature Rifle Club the election of officers resulted: Patron, Mr H. H.
