OBITUARY
MR JOHN BAMBRIDGE One of the oldest members of the printing and journalistic profession in Canterbury, Mr John Bambridge, passed away in the Timaru Hospital on Monday at the age of 79 years. Born in London in 1858, Mr Bambridge came out to New Zealand at an early age to join his father, who had arrived in Timaru the previous year. He received his education at the Timaru Main School, and on leaving school he joined the staff of the Timaru and Gladstone Gazette, which later was changed to the South Canterbury Times, and which was published afterwards in conjunction with the Timaru Herald. Subsequently he joined the staff of the Timaru Herald. About a year after he took an active part in founding the Evening Telegraph, printed and published in Timaru under his control. Mr Bambridge went to Temuka in 1880 to take up a position on the staff of the Temuka Leader, and for over 40 years he was manager, reporter, and head printer of the paper. In 1893 he was married to Miss Edith Lemon, a daughter of the late Mr and Mrs John Lemon, of Oamaru. He is survived by his widow, one son, Mr William John Bambridge (Christchurch) and two daughters, Mrs E. Paynter (Thames) and Mrs John Gourley (Temuka).
CAPTAIN HENRY COLLINS (Per Untied Press Association) WELLINGTON, Mar. 10. The death is announced of Captain Henry Collins, aged 61, who was until recently harbour master at Nelson, where he was born. After lengthy experience as master and mate in steamers he joined the service of the Union Company in 1901 as third officer of the Rotomahana. He served later in the Poherue, Penguin, and Haupiri, and later became chief officer of the old Wainui. In September, 1904, he was appointed harbour master at Nelson, a position which he held until his retirement several weeks ago.
