FRACAS ON STEAMER

CHARGES AGAINST SEAMAN FOUND GUILTY OF ASSAULT (Per United Press Association) AUCKLAND, Feb. 12. The trial of the American seaman, James Gannon, on a charge of attempted murder and on alternative charges arising from an affray on the steamer Golden Gate at Auckland on October 28 last was concluded in the Supreme Court before Mr Justice Fair yesterday afternoon, when the accused was found guilty on one of the alternative charges—namely, assault so as to cause actual bodily harm. The evidence showed that an altercation occurred and that Gannon struck a fellow seaman and then dropped him from the top of a stack of timber to the hatch. The injured man was in a critical condition for some days. His Honor said he took into account the fact that the accused had been in custody for about three months and a-half and imposed a sentence of a further three months.
