REPORTS OF COMMITTEES The following is a summary of the reports of the various committees which will be presented at the fortnightly meeting of the City Council on Monday night. ELECTRIC POWER AND LIGHT COMMITTEE The Electric Power and Light Committee will report as follows:~ WAIPORI TUNNEL The reports of the consulting engineers on the progress of works in connection with the Waipori tunnel during the past two weeks show that during the period a further 91 feet of steel pipe lining were placed and concreted up, making a total of 547 feet completed Work in connection with the picking up of water along a section of the tunnel is in progress, a total of 20 feet having been completed. The contractors had 14 men employed, the whole of these being on the pressure tunnel section. SALE OF OIL TANK An offer from the- Shell. Company of New Zealand, Ltd., to purchase a disused bulk oil tank at present erected at the rear of the power station on the reclaimed land, for the sum of £2O, has been accepted. The company is to dismantle and remove the tank from the present site at its own cost. The area occupied by the tank is now required in connection with the new extra high-pressure sub-station on the reclaimed land. ADVERTISING BOOKLET An application from the Otago Expansion League for a contribution of £ls towards the cost of a booklet of views of Dunedin and surrounding districts, which is shortly to be issued by the league, has been agreed to. The bulk of the cost is being contributed by the Expansion League, Tourist Department, Shipping Companies, and the Railways Department. ADVERTISING ON PICTURE SCREENS The showroom manager has been authorised to take up advertising space on the picture screens of the Regent, St. James, Mayfair, and Strand Theatres, at a charge of 20s per week on a 12-months' contract Additional advertising would be done from time to time at the theatre at Port Chalmers at an extra charge of 2s 6d per week. In addition to the weekly rate mentioned, some expenditure would be required from time to time in purchasing new slides. GAS COMMITTEE CAVERSHAM GASWORKS ) CHIMNEY. The Gas Committee will report that authority has been granted for the out of necessary repairs to the chimney-stack at the Caversham Gasworks, at a cost of £125. The work was found necessary following a detailed inspection of this stack. RESERVES COMMITTEE The Reserves Committee will submit the following report:— PURCHASE OF PLANT. Authority has been granted for the purchase of—(a) one fairway tractor, with back-delivery attachment, at a cost of £235, less 2£ per cent.; (b) one quintuple mower, at a cost of £3OO. These machines are needed to cope with the constantly increasing work in connection with the mowing of recreation grounds, and also for the cutting of grass on portions of the Town Belt and Jubilee Park. The tractor, with trailer attachment, is also needed for general haulage work. Provision has been made in the current year's estimates for the expenditure. CONVENIENCE AND PAINTING WORK. Authority has been granted for the erection of a suitable brick or concrete convenience, with septic tank, for the use of the male employees in the nursery of the Upper Gardens. Instructions have also been given for the preparation of specification and calling of tenders \ for the painting of the butside of the winter garden and fernery. Provision for this expenditure has been made in the current year's estimates. WORKS COMMITTEE POWER MOWER ATTACHMENT. The Works Committee will recommend that the quotation of Messrs John Chambers and Son, Ltd., for the supply and' delivery of one power mower for attaching to. the council's industrial tractor be accepted. This machine is desired for the purpose of cutting grass growing on the sides of streets. Delivery could be given in about three months' time, and the cost will be charged to next year's allocations. INSTRUCTIONS TO ENGINEER The committee will report having instructed the city engineer to. construct a length of about three chains of kerbing and channelling in Forbury road (east side), to join up with the existing kerbing and channelling at the intersection of this street with Wilson avenue, at an estimated cost of £3O ; and to excavate a bank in Dairy street to give access to a property at correct street level (estimated cost £4). The engineer has also been instructed to record for consideration with next year's allocations the matter of widening portion of Dairy street, where land has been acquired for the purpose, and walling and fencing on the new alignment (estimated cost £380). BUILDING EXEMPTIONS The committee will recommend that, subject to certain conditions modification of the building regulations be granted in respect of applications by Messrs E. Mullenger and W. Wallace and Messrs Clark and Russell. FINANCE COMMITTEE SPANISH RELIEF GRANT The Finance Committee will recommend that a grant of £5 be made to the Spanish Relief Com mittee to assist the movement to send a medical unit to Spain. OTAGO MUSEUM The committee will further recommend that provision be made in the estimates for the incoming year for an increase in the council's contribution for the upkeep of the Otago University Museum from £l7O to £750. The committee is satisfied, from the information which has been placed before it, that the increase is essential if the institution is to be maintained at a reasonable standard and continue to be of educational value to the public.
