Sarangapani is the presiding deity of the richest temple" in the district of Kumbakouam, Madras. He already is married to one idol, but the temple priest, who promises a substantial dowry to the supporters of a popular female idol in a neighbouring temple wants Sarangapani to take unto himself a second bride. The temple trustees oppose the wedding, and the priest threatens trouble. So the district attorney has warned priest and trustees that unless they come to an amicable settlement, the matter will be threshed out in the courts. They are now looking for a "sign" from the other gods which will reveal whether Sarangapani Is to marry.
