DOMINION ATHLETES
SELECTION FOR EMPIRE GAMES DIFFICULTIES TO BE FACED (Per United Press Association) WELLINGTON, Feb. 9. Suggestions for selecting the New Zealand athletes for the British Empire Games at Sydney in February, 1938, were offered at a meeting of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, and it was decided after a long discussion to communicate with the Australian authorities pointing out the difficulties of selection, and asking for a postponement of the date of entry. The secretary (Mr H. M'Cormick) said the list of sports and events in which the Dominion would be represented was required to reach Sydney by October 31, and the selected teams by December 31. Late entries would close on January 22, 1938. Mr H. I. Austad said that there was little opportunity of selecting a New Zealand athletic team by December 31, but if the Dominion championships were put forward two months to the middle of January the team could be selected immediately afterwards. Mr F. S. Hill suggested that trials should be held by the centres in mid-November, to be followed by North-South Island trials and later a final Possible-Probables meeting. The council had previously made the mistake of selecting the team on the basis of one meeting. Mr L. A. Tracy said there was no reason why the championships should not be held in December. The centres should be advised that the council proposed to hold the championships on December 10, and they should be asked to hold either their provincial championships, or trial meetings, before that date.
