OTAGO EARLY SETTLERS

MONTHLY MEETING OF COMMITTEE The monthly meeting of the committee of the Otago Early Settlers’ Association was held yesterday afternoon. There were present Messrs D. J. Calder (president, in the chair). E. Webster, H. Baron, F. A Cheyne, W. H. Ferens, E. C. Hazlett, J. Hope, F. W. Knight, R. S. J. A. Macdonald, W. Nicolson, J. A: Paterson, J. C. H. Somerville, W. J. Strong, and A. E. Selby. The president reported that all arrangements in connection with the anniversary celebrations on March 23 and 24, next, had been left in the hands of the Social Committee. An invitation had been extended to their Excellencies Lord and Lady Galway to be present, but a reply had been received that they were unable to attend.

The work of painting and renovating the Early Settlers’ Hall had now been completed and a vote of thanks was passed to Mr A. E. Selby for his assistance in preparing specifications and supervising the work. - # The following gifts were received and votes of thanks were passed to the donors:— From Mr E. O. From the estate ol the late Mrs Thomas Brown, Dunedin—Framed portrait of her late husband, Thomas Brown (Brown, Ewing and Co.), Dunedin, Sir William Eyre, 1863; also a panorainic view of early Dunedin and a large picture of Queen Victoria’s diamond jubilee. St Paul’s Cathedral.

Harlow, Dunedin—A collection of old coins. Miss J. C. Robertson, Frankton—A suit which belonged to the late Robert Robertson, Frankton (arrived Sir William Eyre, 1863). This was worn by him on his wedding day in Scotland, 1828. Mrs D. Howatson (nee Campbell), Port Chalmers, and Miss S. Campbell, New Plymouth—Framed portraits of their late parents, Mr and Mrs George Campbell, Milburn, Electric, 1863. Miss Melville, Dunedin—List of ex-imperial servicemen and exvolunteers, Queen Victoria’s diamond jubilee, 1897. F. G. Haigh, Dunedin —Framed portrait of his late father, Captain Sidney Haigh, arrived Dunedin, 1860; also Volunteer long-service medals and a number of other souvenirs connected with the Wakari Rifles, which belonged to his father.

Brown, Dunedin, aged 77, Gil Bias, 1860; Mrs Mary Jarman (nee Braithwaite), Dunedin, Mary E. RaeJ 1862; Mrs Margaret Elliott (nee Nichol), Dunedin, aged 83, Strathmore, 1856; Mrs Mary A. Coombes (nee Todd), North-East Valley, Agra, 1856; Mrs Elizabeth Foord (nee Renn), Opoho, Pladda, 1860. The following descendants were enrolled as life members: —James P. M'Neil, Melbourne, grandparents, Mr and Mrs Hugh M‘Neil, s.s. Gothenburg, 1863, and father, Alex. M'Neil, arrived Champion of the Seas, 1862; Leslie W. Harris, Dunedin,- father, Woolf Harris, arrived 1857, mother (nee Elizabeth Nathan) born Auckland, 1848. The following descendants were enrolled during the month: —William H.
