The magnitude of the problem mav be realised when it is remembered how . many householders of small means have bought or are still buying their houses through building societies. I So far there has been no pronounce- ; ment by the Government as to its willingness to undertake the burden of insurance which the companies have declined. The Chamber of Shipping passed a resolution last February urging the Government to introduce the measure necessary to carry on the system,, in successful operation during the war, of insurance on British ships and their cargoes against war risks. An assur- j ance was given in reply that a modified form of the svstem used in the last I war had been prepared and was being | held in readiness.
