THE PEACE OFFER
HERR HITLER'S SPEECH LITTLE ENTHUSIASM ROUSED I United Press Association) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) LONDON, Feb. 3. The Manchester Guardian points out that information received in London indicates that there is little enthusiasm in Germany for Herr Hitler’s speech. The adult population is becoming nervous lest Germany drift into war. In Berlin another evidence of discontent is the resignation of the Minister of Posts and Transport (Baron von Eltz Rubenach), who has declined Herr Hitler’s invitation of January 30 to join the Nazi Party, as he disapproved of its policy towards Catholics, who received a severe blow in South Bavaria, where 95 per cent of the parents voted in favour of undenominational schools, compared with the 65 per cent, favouring them last year. Ecclesiastical authorities in Munich have issued a statement protesting against the methods by which the Nazi victory was obtained, alleging illegitimate pressure. A DIPLOMATIC LULL LONDON, Feb. 3. “ We now expect a period of diplomatic quiet,” the Associated Press was authoritatively informed. This phrase is echoed in Berlin and Paris. L’Oeuvre says the Quai d’Orsay considers that the diplomatic pause has begun. There is no further talk of Dr Schacht visiting Paris in connection with commercial negotiations with Germany. The Berlin correspondent of The Times says the Wilhelmstrasse also expects a lull, and disclaims any projected approach to Britain or France on colonial questions. A German reply to Britain’s Note regarding a Western pact is also not expected.
