THE DAVIS CUP CONTEST JAPAN TO CHALLENGE TOKIO, Jan. 28. Japan is to issue a challenge in the American Zone for the Davis Cup. SOUTH AFRICAN CHALLENGE JOHANNESBURG, Jan. 28. (Received Jan. 29, at 5.5 p.m.) South Africa will challenge for the Davis Cup in the European zone. Her representatives will be Farquharson and Kirby (ranked first and fourth respectively in South Africa in 1936), F. Fannin (ranked tenth; and C. Eedes (unranked), with V. Harris (ranked seventh) as reserve. The last named trio have been selected to gain experience. AUSTRALIAN TITLES SYDNEY, Jan. 29. (Received Jan. 30, at 1.45 a.m.) At the Australian lawn tennis championships the semi-finals resulted as follows: — MEN’S DOUBLES Quist and Turnbull beat Thompson and Turvey 6—3, 10—8, 6—2. MIXED DOUBLES Hopman and Mrs t Hopman beat beat Moon and Miss Wynne 3—6, 6_3, 6—4. WOMEN’S SINGLES Mrs Westacott beat Miss Stevenson 3 —6, B—6, 9—7.
