AUSTRALIAN TITLES ■ • } MISS HARTIGAN DEFEATED ' SYDNEY, Jan. 27. In the quarter-finals of the Women’s Singles at the Australian tennis championships, Miss D. Stevenson, of Victoria, defeated Miss Joan Hartigan, the title-holder, 4—6, 6—3, 6—4. HOPMAN BEATS QUIST SYDNEY, Jan. 27. (Received Jan. 28, at 0.30 a.m.) The Australian tennis championships have reached the quarterfinals. Following are the results:— MEN’S SINGLES Bromwich beat Turnbull (South Australia) 6—2, 6—2, 6—o. Crawford beat'L. Schwartz (South Australia) 6—3, 2—6, 3—6, 6—2, 6-3. M’Grath beat A. Kay (Victoria) 6-2, 6—2, B—6. Hopman defeated Quist 11—9, 3 —6, 7—5, 6—3. This result was a complete surprise. Hopman 1 outgen eralled Quist with clever variations in his game, which upset Quist, causing him to lose much of his customary accuracy. : Vu. Crawford, owing to being less enthusiastic 1 than his young opponent, went perilously close to being beaten. ,
Bromwich, who is rapidly playing himself into the Davis Cup team, outplayed Turnbull at all stages, losing only four games; In the Doubles quarter-finals the ' winners were Misses J. Hartigan and M. Blick, V. Selwin and A. 'Hattersley, T. Coyne and N. Wynne and Mesdames Westacott and Hopman, PROFESSIONALS ON TOUR VINES WINS AGAIN' RICHMOND (Virginia), Jan. 27. (Received Jan. 28, at 0.5 a.m.) Vines defeated Perry 6—3, 3—6, 6—4, before a crowd of 3000, including the Governor. The American’s powerful game under control, smashing service and returns were too much for Perry, who played a steadier game, but was unable to cope with the power of Vines’s shots.
