ASSURANCE BY PRESIDENT EXPECTED TO REDUCE STRIKES WASHINGTON, Jan. 7, (Received Jan. 8, at 7 p.m.) President Roosevelt has given his first direct assurance that no individual in need of relief would be dropped from the W.P.A. pools and that any who had already been eliminated would be reinstated. The statement was made in a letter to Congressmen sho protested against reductions. The statement is expected to curb the “ sit-down ” strikes which have affected several W.P.A. projects. The W.P.A. (Works Progress Administration) is responsible to the President for the honest, speedy, efficient and co-ordinated execution of the works programme in such a way as to move from the relief rolls to work on projects or in private employment the largest possible number of persons in the shortest possible time.
