YEAR OF STRIFE
—. .** LETTER FROM PALESTINE "FUTURE STILL UNCERTAIN" A letter which reached Auckland recently from Jerusalem says that the year in Palestine has been one of strife and conflict, with' the future still uncertain. The writer informs his Auckland friends that a Royal Commission is making a study of the situation, and much will depend on the commission's final report, but it is felt that there will be disappointment for one, if not both,, factions interested in "the too much promised land." Six: months of strike and active rebellion has left a feeling of great uneasiness. The writer states that Christmas was approaching, and, "as had been the custom through the centuries, processions would be formed, candles would be lit. Masses would be chanted, shepherds and. their flocks would roam over the hills near Bethlehem, and camel trains would make their way over the ancient roads.
The writer added that Christmas time was also welcomed in Palestine for the reason that the rains then generally started after many months of dry weather, and then the land would turn green, crops be planted, and wild flowers in many hues would cover the hillsides and the wadis, and fields would be planted and harvested. ,
